More details about Super Mario Galaxy Movie were revealed during a new Nintendo Direct, including an updated release date of April 1st. In addition to news that the movie will arrive a little earlier than expected, Nintendo has shared the first looks at some new characters for Super Mario Galaxy Movie through a trailer.
Given the incredible success of the original Super Mario Bros. Moviehype for the sequel was unsurprisingly high. In November, Nintendo shared the first full trailer for the film, revealing that Benny Safdie and Brie Larson will be voicing Bowser Jr. and Rosalina. With the film just months away from release, a new take on the animated adventure has been shared.
The trailer for Super Mario Galaxy reveals the first look at Yoshi
This new sneak peek came as part of a special Super Mario Galaxy Movie– themed Nintendo Direct on January 25th. The presentation revealed that the film will be released on April 1 in the US and some other major markets. For context, the film was originally expected to release on April 3, meaning fans will be able to see the film earlier than expected. In addition to the release date change, Nintendo shared a new trailer for the film, revealing official looks at Yoshi, Birdo, Mouser, Lakita, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi.
The trailer started with Mario and Luigi cycling through the desert to visit the place where Tostarena apparently came from Super Mario Odyssey. Once there, they were tasked with solving a plumbing problem inside the Inverted Pyramid, meeting up with Yoshi. The trailer confirmed the design of the green dinosaur that was leaked months earlier. While Yoshi starts out shy, he seems to become part of the gang later on.
Behind the reveal of Yoshi, a new trailer for Super Mario Galaxy Movie revealed Birdo and Mouser, two characters from Super Mario Bros. 2 on NSZ. Their roles are still somewhat unclear as they are only shown briefly in the trailer. However, Birdo appeared hostile, fighting Peach by throwing eggs at her. In another shot, Lakitu was seen attacking Mario, Luigi and Yoshi before they escaped through a pipe. Baby Mario and Baby Luigi also made brief appearances.
While another Mario the film takes a lot of inspiration Galaxy Super Mario games, this latest trailer shows what the creators are drawing from Super Mario Odyssey also. In addition to the Sand Kingdom with the city of Tostarena and the inverted pyramid, the trailer revealed a giant T.rex that looks similar to the one we saw in the Cascade Kingdom. It's also worth noting that the trailer showed Luigi wearing the frog suit from Super Mario Bros. 3 take out the giant Cheep Cheep.
Unfortunately, Nintendo hasn't revealed more footage of Bowser Jr. and Rosalina, the two new main characters in the film. However, Illumination's Chris Meledandri shared a production update which revealed that animation was “fully completed” on the project. The film is now in post-production, with Meledandri noting that teams are focusing on sound design and music. Notably, composer Brian Tyler is working on a score that will feature themes from Galaxy Super Mario plays, with a 70-piece orchestra.
It will be interesting to see what happens next Galaxy Super Mario is revealed before its release. Luckily, April 1st is just over two months away, so fans don't have long to wait before seeing the film in theaters.
