The Nintendo Switch 2 they could see an extended release Splatoon 3 in the near future, according to a rumored rating update that was passed around on social media. Despite the rumors, Nintendo has not confirmed if Splatoon 3 will get all the dedicated improvements after the Switch 2 free update patch went live in June.
From its launch in September 2022 Splatoon 3 has become one of Nintendo's most visited multiplayer titles thanks to its devoted fan base and unique graphical style. Within two years of publication, Splatoon 3 has sold over 11.9 million units worldwide, making it the best-selling item in its category Splatoon franchise to date. While Splatoon 3 already held its last event, Splatfest, the Grand Festival in September 2024, which hasn't stopped Nintendo from repeating seasonal events for new players who missed them the first time around. Nintendo officially reveals the 20 best-selling digital games of 2025 in Japan, showing the biggest winners for both Switch and Switch 2.
A new Splatoon 3 listing could disrupt potential Switch 2 plans
Although rumors of Splatoon 3's future should be taken with a grain of salt, the rating update may give fans some reasons to hope for new developments. The Pan European Game Information (PEGI) website has updated its rating Splatoon 3 listing to include Switch 2 as the console the game is available on. Currently, Splatoon 3 has an alternate release date of December 31, 2025 for Switch 2 alongside the original release date of September 9, 2022 on Switch.
Although Splatoon 3 received a free patch in June 2025 to accommodate the Switch 2 launch, the changes made were mainly on the graphics side. in addition Splatoon 3The 10.0.0 update made some graphical compromises on the original Switch system to make the game fair for users of both systems in competitive game modes. It is currently unclear why Splatoon 3 received a PEGI rating update to include the Switch 2, given that version 10.0.0 was released six months after the listing update.
Additionally, a similar listing for Pikmin 3 Deluxe was found earlier in December in the PEGI database, where the Switch 2 was added to the list of supported consoles. So both PEGI updates could lend credence to the notion that Nintendo still has plans to update specific Switch games to take advantage of the Switch 2 hardware. Although the Switch 2 release calendar for 2026 is still in development, some of the confirmed entries include Nintendo Switch 2 editions for Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Animal Crossing: New Horizonpp. Although Nintendo has not officially stated if Splatoon 3 will receive a dedicated edition of the Nintendo Switch 2, the Splatoon the franchise still has another project in development for fans to keep an eye out for.
Splatoon's Future On The Switch 2 is still in development
Originally revealed at the same time as Splatoon 3'update with 10.0.0, Splatoon Raiders is a spin-off that will put players in control of a new character called The Mechanic. The Mechanic will be joined by Deep Cut, the main band Splatoon 3 and his Splatfest event on the Spiralite Islands. While more details about Splatoon Raidersincluding its genre and release window, remain elusive, one can only guess when Nintendo will reveal more information about the upcoming project.
However, fans looking to get their hands on a Switch 2 to enjoy all the upcoming titles Nintendo has planned for 2026 and beyond should act fast. With the ongoing DRAM shortage crisis causing the prices of RAM kits and solid state drives (SSDs) to skyrocket, the Switch 2 and other current-gen targets will likely face price increases throughout 2026. While Nintendo hasn't said if or when the Switch 2 will see a price change, time will tell what choices the gaming giant makes.
