Newly released anime, Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, quickly caught the attention of many anime viewers. It tells the story of a heroic party consisting of the mage Frieren, the hero Himmel, the priest Heiter, and the warrior Eisen, who after ten years of fighting finally defeat the demon king and return home before disbanding. However, Frieren ages much more slowly and must witness the aging and eventual departure of each of his companions.

Delicious In Dungeon
A brilliant fantasy anime that can compete with Frieren in most areas
Ventilation next to it Frierenopening season, Delicious in the Dungeon wasn't an instant hit like its contemporary, but rather a slow success story that gradually turned into one of the best shows of 2024. Both anime are set in gorgeous fantasy worlds that seem to draw inspiration from tabletop RPGs, and revolve around parties who are on a specific mission. As Frieren's group traces the elf's past, Delicious in the DungeonThe heroes delve deeper into the vast dungeon, all hoping to find the dragon that has eaten one of their members.
While ultimately quite different, the two series work perfectly as companion pieces that scratch the same itch, albeit in unique ways. Delicious in the Dungeon it starts off with a fairly light tone, but overall it's much darker than Frierenthough it maintains an upbeat tone throughout its run. Trigger's animation is also near flawless.
Mushi-Shi
Rare Iyashikei Supernatural anime
Trading fantasy for the supernatural, Mushi-Shi probably comes closest to replication Frieren's tone. Ginko travels around Japan looking for stories that might indicate the presence of Mushi, supernatural entities that exist outside of humanity but can also affect humans. Mostly an observer, but also willing to get involved if the situation calls for it, Ginko is a surrogate for the audience, serving as their eyes and ears to a world that is both familiar and foreign.
While their settings are nothing alike, Mushi-Shi and Frieren both are fantastic iyashikei anime that revolve around characters traveling from area to area. Mushi-Shi is even slower than Frierenbut it's just as captivating.
Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions
A more grounded Isekai anime that focuses on partying
Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions features the familiar otherworldly Isekai trope of a group of strangers finding themselves in an unknown territory, a foreign land, with nothing but their hazy memories and distinct emotions coursing through every inch of their bodies: fear and survival.
Foreigners, no more than teenagers, have only the option of becoming soldiers in the reserve army and have no other means of earning a living. While all the stronger candidates set off in groups, those left behind must also find a way to survive. With their lives hanging in the balance, the remaining candidates form an unlikely group and must work together to ensure their survival.
Spice and Wolf
A fantasy anime about discovery, love and life
Spice and Wolf presents the story of wolf deity Hol and traveling salesman Kraft Lawrence as their lives collide and snowball into something more than they bargained for. The powerful wolf deity Holo was worshiped in the city of Pasloe for blessing the annual harvest. However, as the years pass and the people become self-sufficient, Holo is reduced to nothing more than an odd spectator in the city, more or less a folk tale of what once was.
Hol's days of observation end when he proposes to Kraft, a traveling salesman who happens to stop by, to become his business partner if he helps her go to her northern home, Yoitsu. Recognizing her skills, Kraft agrees to grant her request, and the deal kicks off the beginning of their many adventures.
Similar to Frieren, Spice and Wolf focuses quite a bit on the quieter moments in the adventure while shining a spotlight on its main relationship.
