The best cards used by Joey Wheeler in Yu-Gi-Oh!

Yu-Gi-Oh! the anime has a lot of legendary characters that have stuck with fans throughout the duration of the card game. One of the biggest is Yugi's best friend and third greatest duelist in the original anime, Joey Wheeler. Joey is iconic for his efforts to pay for his sister's surgery and his reliance on luck-based cards.

As a duelist, Joey is the mirror image of any newcomer to the card game. Joey started out as Solomon Mut's hot apprentice and quickly became one of the best duelists in the series. Despite everything, most of Joey's cards are more iconic than viable in the actual TCG. Fortunately, he had some powerful tools at his disposal when he wasn't rolling the dice.

Gearfried The Iron Knight

Usable card

Joey mostly used Gearfried The Iron Knight as a beatstick. With an offense of 1800 and a defense of 1600, he was a perfect fit for the era in which he was played. However, it also had other uses that only the most experienced players of the game could use.

Gearfried The Iron Knight destroys any equipment card attached to it. This created the perfect opening for an exploit that revolved around using Butterfly Dagger Alma over and over again, filling the Royal Magical Library for several free draws with each use.

Jinzo

Trap plug

Joey Wheeler won Jinzo during a duel with Esper Roba in Battle City. Jinzo is one of the best early sluices in Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG. For just one tribute, Jinzo would hit the field and all trap cards would be void.

Jinzo would also prevent your opponent from activating any more traps while he is on the field. This makes Jinzo the perfect defense against cards like Bottomless Trap Hole, Mirror Force, or any trap that can't prevent Jinzo from being summoned in the first place.

Raigeki

Destroy all monsters

Joey has used many zero-cost wipes throughout the anime. One of them is Raigeki. This card destroys all of your opponent's monsters without limit. It doesn't matter if your opponent has them face down or in a defensive position.

Once this card is played, they are all destroyed unless your opponent negates. It's a powerful card in Joey's arsenal that is just as powerful in the real TCG. Due to this powerful effect, the card was banned in previous ban lists.

Grave Robber

A card that has never been updated

One special card that can be found in Joey's deck is Graverobber. This card is unique because it rarely gets reprinted and those who reprinted it don't provide it with problem solving text. However, the general idea is that you can take a spell from your opponent's grave and use it if you pay 2000 life.

When the game was still slow enough, this card could take advantage of many generic spells that your opponent was already using. This includes Monster Reborn, Change of Heart, Pot of Greed, and anything that could give you an advantage during your turn.

Scapegoat

Flood the field with tokens

Scapegoat is one of the first few Quick Play Spells introduced in the game. It's also a surprisingly good card to include in Joey's lineup. These cute little sheep come in flocks of four and can swarm your field to give you protection from attacks.

As a quick game spell, this card can be used towards the end of an opponent's turn to get bodies onto the board. You can then Tribute them as bigger monsters during your turn as you are no longer held back by card summon lock.

A bottomless trap hole

Keep the board empty

In the early days of Duel Monsters, the Bottomless Trap Hole was a real threat. Try to summon a monster with more than 1500 attack and this trap will immediately destroy it and then chase it away. This card could also do this to multiple monsters if they were summoned at the same time.

This was one of the earlier cards that used the banish system, and it was an easy way to make your opponent waste their normal summon for a turn. This card found a home in many decks that loved to control the game.

Time guide

Chance Card With Punch

If you don't have access to Dark Hole, Raigeki, or board clear cards in the game, Time Wizard could give you a chance to make a comeback. Joey often used this card in the anime to turn Baby Dragon into Thousand Dragon. In the TCG, this card did not do this trick, but was often listed as a material for certain cards.

On the other hand, if you flip the coin correctly, you can destroy all of your opponent's monsters by wiping the board clean. However, the wrong call often means that all your monsters will be destroyed.

Giant Trunada

Get rid of the traps and get the cards back into your hand

Giant Trunade is one of the best spells to get rid of the back row. This is because it doesn't destroy cards, it sends them back to the hand. This gave the Giant Trunade many different ways to be useful in a fight.

One could use Giant Trunade to get rid of traps on the opponent's side of the field. This will force them to reset the cards and wait for them to start playing. This card can also get cards from your own back row back into your hand so you can play them again or get rid of floodgates to play without being affected by their effects.

Early burial

Equip a gap spell

Premature Burial is a card so good it was banned. However, that doesn't stop Joey from using her in his deck. Premature Burial allows you to revive a monster from the graveyard by attaching as an equip spell card.

However, due to a loophole in the card's text, Premature Burial would allow monsters to remain on the field after being revived until this card is destroyed. This allowed players to deflect Premature Burial and use it again in the exact same turn.

Fiber container

A never ending fight

Joey's deck contains one of the most infamous Jar cards in Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG history. Fiber Jar is a Flip Monster that can reset the entire game if activated correctly. Suddenly, the graveyard would be shuffled back into the deck and each player's hands reset as they each drew five cards.

Fiber Jar was once used to stop a tournament with the Jar effect resolving multiple times. Essentially, Fiber Jar allows you to start your turn with minimal disruption so you can swarm the field with monsters and hit the game with ease.
