Creative ARC Raiders are currently focusing on a playstyle that emphasizes world exploration rather than just traditional combat mechanics. This change of direction for ARC Raiders has been a major point of discussion lately as the team tries to separate their project from other titles in the crowded extraction genre. The developers at Embark Studios have long struggled to define exactly what kind of experience they want to give players. While the game still features plenty of high-stakes action, the latest philosophy is to let people soak up the atmosphere and find their own way through the environment.
After the official launch on October 30, 2025 ARC Raiders quickly became a massive hit with over 12 million copies sold across various platforms. The studio, Embark, initially had a very different idea for the project, initially focusing more on a structured boss fight loop. However, the development process was somewhat chaotic as no one could agree on a basic loop. This led to a major internal pivot where the team decided to scrap their original plans in favor of an extraction-style reset. This shift wasn't just about changing the genre, it was about finding a way to make the game more accessible to a wider audience while still offering the high stakes fans of the studio have come to expect.
ARC Raiders developer reveals future plans for studio
The CEO of Embark Studio states that new games are in development due to the great financial success that ARC Raiders has achieved since its launch last year.
The main direction to player freedom and adventure
The story of the game takes place on a future Earth that has been completely devastated by mechanical enemies. In this environment, players must survive against these machines while collecting what they need to stay alive. Production director Caio Braga mentioned during a recent talk at GDC that early on in development, no one could agree on what they were doing. He shared that, “You would ask anyone who would say it was a battle royale versus ARCor is it cooperation Shadow of the Colossus game, or is it a heroic looter shooter… ours ARC the developers thought the game was cooperative Soul Braga explained to PC Gamer that the studio ultimately decided to change lanes, stating, “That's when we thought we wanted to find an accessible, at the time, extraction shooter.” However, it soon realized that the real potential was in the “adventure” side of things. He noted that “We saw more potential in allowing players to explore instead of just shoot.” This has led to the fact that in the current design you can basically play whichever way the player wants to play as the most important way the player has chosen. this includes fighting or just wandering.

This new focus on freedom has resulted in some very strange and fun behavior in the gaming community. The developers were reportedly surprised by how people interact with the world. Some players have taken it upon themselves to act as “Defenders of the Swamp”, protecting certain areas of the map for nothing more than their own enjoyment. The studio even leaned into that sense of fun with unique challenges. A popular Reddit thread highlighted a recent event where players were tasked with being struck by lightning. While it might seem like the developers are just trolling, many fans have been trying to complete the objective and get more blueprints and skins. It turns out that participating in a party or in specific weather triples your points, so it's a great way to climb the ranks. These kinds of social interactions help the game stand out as a more social sim compared to more traditional rivals like Bungie's. Marathon.
While the game is winning people over, the studio has also had to work hard to correct some early mistakes regarding the game's presentation and technology. One of the biggest controversies involved the use of artificial intelligence for character voices, which many fans felt made the game feel hollow. The developers faced considerable backlash for using text-to-speech systems for the game's characters. Embark Studios CEO Patrick Söderlund eventually addressed these concerns, admitting that real actors are better than AI and that they re-recorded these lines with real human talent to make the world feel more authentic.
Going forward, the game continues to struggle with mechanical updates as well as technical hurdles. On March 17, Embark released update 1.20.0, which brought some heavy balancing changes. The popular Il Toro weapon has been nerfed as its damage, fire rate, and reload speed have all been hit to make it less dominant. However, the update was overshadowed by massive server outages that saw more than 113,000 people struggling with connection errors. Despite these hiccups, Embark remains proactive with its plan. It previously released update 1.19.0 in January, promising a large new map and more bot types for April 2026. Söderlund also clarified that while AI is used as a “production tool” to support legacy ways of working, very little of the landscape or character work is generated by machines. As the game grows, it looks like we'll be focusing on improving the player experience and making sure the adventure remains the star of the show.
