The Final Fantasy 7 remake could take up nearly 40 percent of your Switch 2 storage

Square Enix previously revealed that Final Fantasy 7 Remake will be 88GB on the Nintendo Switch 2, making it the biggest game on the console to date when it launches next year. However, that number has now been changed, and it turns out that the ambitious Switch 2 port version will actually be even bigger.

Square confirmed the news on Twitter this morning, sharing the new file sizes and noting that the relevant store pages will be updated accordingly. If you plan to play Final Fantasy 7 Remake Standard Edition on Switch 2, you'll need up to 95GB of free space before you can make your next trip to Midgar.

If you're picking up Limited Early Purchase or Limited Early Purchase Digital Deluxe Editions of games, you'll need even more free space. Potentially up to 99GB, which is officially the new record for the biggest Switch 2 game to date, FF7 Remake beats its own, seemingly imprecise, record of 88GB.

For those of you doing the math in your heads right now, 99GB is a little more than 38 percent of the 256GB of storage available on the standard Switch 2. You can add that storage, but I don't think most Switch 2 owners have felt the need to do so yet. Maybe it's time to invest in how much your Switch 2 can handle. File sizes have been reaching incredible heights for years, and even though the Switch 2 has half the storage of the next smallest console on the market, those file sizes have now arrived at Nintendo's door.

Even first-party Nintendo games suffered a bit from larger file sizes. While it managed to keep Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza under 30GB each through some sort of Nintendo Wizardry, it couldn't do the same for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. At 45GB, while it's less than half the size of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, it's four times the size of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Despite the massive file size, the physical edition of Final Fantasy 7 Remake on Switch 2 will be a game keycard, seemingly for the exact opposite reason that most games have been game keycards thus far. Nintendo offers 64GB cards, which means many studios opt for game key cards instead because they don't need as much space. For Final Fantasy 7, this would mean splitting the game into two cards. This would have been a great nod to the 3 disc version of the original game, but I think it was never even considered due to cost.
