Naughty Dog may have given up on The Last of Us Part 2's Factions mode a long time ago, but fans are working on making a multiplayer mode possible.
As we're all painfully aware by now, it's been a while since Naughty Dog released a proper new game. Sure, we got The Last of Us remake and the definitive release of its sequel, but it's now approaching six years since the studio's last release. While Intergalactic will hopefully make up for the wait, it almost didn't.
For quite some time, Naughty Dog has been working on a special multiplayer mode for The Last of Us Part 2, which eventually evolved into its own thing. Unfortunately, that project was canceled over two years ago, so we're all curious to see what a current-gen Last of Us multiplayer game might look like.
The Last Of Us Part 2 Fans Are Working On A Multiplayer Mode That's The Closest To Factions We'll Get
If the Mod is ever finished it will be focused on PVP
Speclizer_ (a renowned modder in The Last of Us community) took to Twitter to share a clip of a multiplayer mod they've been working on for The Last of Us Part 2 on PC. The clip shows two players running around the massive Seattle, Day 1 map, and strangely floating in the air for a moment.
HBO's The Last Of Us is now just another failed video game adaptation
I enjoyed the second season of HBO's The Last of Us, but I can see where this is going.
To be fair, Speclizer_ outright says it's “very broken” and “not much has been implemented yet,” so floating Ellie's shouldn't raise too many eyebrows.
The short clip is just a test for a mod that's far from finished, but the fact that it's up and running in this state is an interesting sign of things to come. Speclizer_ actually seems to have some ideas for the future of the mod, as they noted in their reply that if it's finished, it will be PvP focused, as adding more NPCs breaks the code.
Since the mod is obviously in a very early state, it's unclear if Speclizer_ will make it to this point, but since the official Factions have been abandoned for a while, this is pretty much the closest we'll ever get to it. Here's hoping the mod eventually makes it to a fully playable state.
