The only surviving member of the cast of the first series of Doctor Who is set to return to the show for its 60th anniversary.

While Davies returns to 2021 Doctor Who was heralded as wildly impressive at a time when the iconic IP could have done better, it seems there may still be some issues with the show. Recently, the current Dr. Ncuti Gatwa continued The Graham Norton Show and stated: “We've filmed a second series this year, a Christmas special is coming up and we're filming a third series next year.” While this was generally taken as positive news, when the press briefings were released, eyebrows began to be raised after the show aired and the comments were changed to instead say “We finished the second season this year, we have a Christmas episode coming out… on Christmas… But it was amazing.” While Deadline was able to expand on the rumor by confirming that the change was not at the behest of the BBC, but rather an editorial decision, the whole thing seems to indicate that Gatw's relatively recent run in the role is coming to an end.


The problem comes from the fact that a third series for the Fifteenth Doctor already looked unlikely for a number of reasons and the BBC distanced itself from his comments. “As we've said before, a decision on a third season will be made after the second season airs and, as always, we don't comment on speculation,” a spokesperson for the production confirmed in a statement. This echoes the sentiment expressed in the latest issue Doctor Who Franchise boss Russell T. Davies magazine, who went even further and insisted that's how it's always been done. Taking those revision rumors aside, it's hard to see any good omens for Dr. Gatwa.


The most unfavorable factor for Gatwa is the built-in transition tool that his two generations left the creative team. With the ever-adorable David Tennant already in the show's current narrative, Doctor Who could easily go back to what worked before and take another step in the direction of a disturbing trend that the MCU seems to have borrowed from the franchise with the return of Robert Downey Jr. While many fans would welcome Tennant taking center stage again, it would be a bad sign of health for the franchise as a whole, and kind of a white flag for the current streak of trying new things with the character, for better or worse.


While Doctor Who It looks set to return to tradition with a Christmas special at the end of the year, and having made many promises about the quality and appeal of a second season with Gatwa, it's unclear how likely the show is to fare better with fans. While Gatwa's time as the Doctor hasn't been as poorly received as Jodie Whitaker's run, it's hard not to see a downward trend in the franchise similar to the problems the MCU and DCEU have run into over the past few years. Fans will have to wait and see if the Doctor can handle this rough patch or if he will have to regenerate again.
