The latest Zombies Black Ops 7 announcement is an even bigger scratch than Paradox Junction

After the backlash against Season 2's Paradox Junction, which was another version of Nuketown, Treyarch is trying to calm down Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Zombies fans that the game still has plenty of content to look forward to. And to Treyarch's credit, the first looks at the Totenreich map from Season 3 Reloaded and OP Legacy Weapons being added to the Mystery Box alongside it seem exciting. Zombie Battle is a fun Grief-like experience that you can also play with friends and randoms, and Ashwood is an engaging survival map as the fog trick from Ashes of the Damned has been reused in the terrain level. However, the problem with Ashwood isn't the map itself, it's that it's the last of its kind.

Treyarch recently announced during the Dev Talk for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Season 3 that Ashwood will be the final survival map taken from Ashes of the Damned, a decision that immediately led to confused members of the community posting on social media. Whether it's regular redditors like MarcelloJulio or well-known CoD leakers like @TheGhostOfHope, it's clear that this choice caught the community by surprise. From launch, many believed that Blackwater Lake would be the ideal map for survival, but apparently that won't be the case at all. While Paradox Junction makes sense in terms of saving time and resources, figuring out why Blackwater Lake was left on the cutting room floor is a bit trickier.

The creation of Paradox Junction also features a Nuketown Survival map, which was not only leaked, but seemingly confirmed by the addition of a round 10 emblem to the main menu.

Why might the blackwater lake survival map have been skipped?

Blackwater Lake seemingly had everything possible as a POI; on-ice and driveway training locations, a cramped main cabin for hectic close-quarters encounters, room to add a Wunderfizz and Pack-a-Punch machine, and existing TEDD Trials/Ammunition/The Mystery Box locations. There are several theories as to why this does not happen, the most prominent being:

  1. A surprising comeback Black Ops Cold WarOnslaught mode

  2. Blackwater Lack's open areas make it too easy to survive

  3. Treyarch feels that the upcoming wheel-based maps offer more interesting survival arenas

The first theory has no evidence to support it, and since Onslaught wasn't a huge hit, it seems rather unlikely to be true. Still, in a world where Treyarch suddenly revived a mode that saw players kill small groups of undead as they escorted a Dark Aether orb across multiplayer maps, this would explain the lack of Blackwater Lake. This is because the Homestead multiplayer map is essentially a larger version of the Blackwater game space, so Treyarch would be doubling down on the same location instead of giving fans more for their money. The second theory is similarly questionable. Sure, Blackwater Lake is a popular location on Ashes of the Damned, but simple trains exist on other Ashes-derived Survival maps as well. And if Treyarch wanted to increase the difficulty, they could always only include the interior of the cabin, resulting in a cramped and challenging map like Groesten Haus from WW2 Zombies.

That leaves the third theory, and it would be a good sign in the end Black Ops 7future. Looks like there are 3 seasons left Black Ops 7 Zombies support (S3 Reloaded, S4 Reloaded, and S5 Reloaded contain the remaining wheel-based maps), naturally leaves only a few more slots for Survival arenas. Instead of spending those slots on Ashes, a map that has already had a strong presence in Survival, Treyarch may want to make sure some cool standalone areas from the next three full maps come to the mode instead. Maybe there is something amazing and unexpected, like the placement of Astra Malorum on Mars, that would blow Lake Blackwater out of the water. Totenreich is obviously going to be a massive map as well, so it's definitely ripe for the picking when it comes to Survival maps (Lighthouse, for example, already seems like a strong contender).

That said, hopefully Treyarch sees the demand for Lake Blackwater and is considering throwing it in as a bonus before ending support for Black Ops 7 Zombies and go all out on his next Call of Duty game. It could lead to a double drop of the survival map like it did in season 1, or maybe it could be an extra reward Super Easter egg. There's clearly interest there, perhaps more than Treyarch initially realized. With players wanting Blackwater to be a dedicated map instead of locations like Zarya Spaceport, keeping it last and then moving from Ashes before it could be released was clearly a mistake. Whether that complaint is resolved remains to be seen, but on the other hand, Treyarch suddenly moving on from Ashes suggests it's preparing some fun survival maps from the remaining releases.
