The PlayStation Portal March 2026 update adds big new features

Sony announces a brand new update to the PS Portal remote player, which is constantly evolving and creating an experience for PlayStation gamers, whether they use it for remote gaming or as a cloud streaming device. PlayStation Portal has been constantly evolving since its original launch in 2023. While this isn't a throwback to the old PSP days,

Despite the constant clamor for a true stand-alone PlayStation handheld similar to the PSP of the day, Portal proved to be a big hit for Sony. Thanks to this sales success, Sony has continued to evolve the handheld over the past few years, improving the overall experience with new features like Cloud Streaming and other highly requested enhancements. With the latest update, it seems that Sony has no intention of slowing down with the further development of this handheld device.

PlayStation unveils a new controller that has fans scratching their heads

PlayStation is promoting a new controller that has left many fans scratching their heads after the big news that surfaced a few days ago.

March 17, 2026 PS Portal Update Features

In a new blog post, Sony Senior Product Management Manager Takuro Fushimi revealed all the details about the latest PlayStation Portal update. It's been a few months since the last PS Portal update, and it finally added a cloud streaming option for users, allowing them to stream games whether it's when another person is using the PS5 or when they're on the go using high-speed Wi-Fi. While the previous update also included some other improvements, such as a redesigned home screen UI and 3D audio support, this March update continues to make the device's streaming page with more improvements.

High quality mode

In this update, Remote Play and Cloud Streaming users can now choose a new visual option. 1080p High Quality mode gives gamers the option of a higher bitrate when playing games compared to the traditional standard mode, adding a smoother and more faithful experience. It should be noted that choosing this option consumes more data due to the higher video quality and will largely depend on the quality of the network connection. Players can enable this option from the following settings:

  1. From the quick menu, select Maximum resolution, then select 1080p high quality mode.

  2. Make sure you select “Apply and Restart” to save the change. Note that this will force a session restart for the changes to take effect.

Cloud streaming improvements

Next up are continued quality of life improvements to the Cloud Streaming option for PlayStation Portal. While the mode requires a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription to use, Sony has added a few new tweaks to “improve usability and reduce friction” during sessions. These include:

  • Improved product details page – Selecting Steam on the bundle product page will bring up a page where users can select the specific game they want to play.
  • Game invitations – When streaming a supported game, game invites will now appear in a clear notification on the screen.
  • Improved trophy notifications – Similarly, unlocked trophy notifications now clearly display the title and associated image. Additionally, platinum trophies now feature a unique animation when unlocked.
  • Improved search – Sony has also improved the search interface, including an on-screen keyboard that appears immediately when searching.

Improvements to the onboarding experience

The last part of this update is about the handheld integration experience. In particular, Sony has tried to make the process easier for those joining without a previous PlayStation account. While there has been a lot of controversy surrounding the need for a PlayStation account, especially on the PC side of things, Portal now includes a QR code that can be scanned from a mobile device to help create a new account quickly.

The post also highlighted how popular the addition of cloud streaming has been for the portal. Since the November 2025 update, cloud streaming users have grown 162% year over year. As part of this, more than 50% of the portal's users have upgraded to PlayStation Plus Premium to take advantage of Cloud Streaming, a figure that undoubtedly pleased Sony and is likely a big reason why the company continues to improve the handheld for its growing player base.
