The PS5 Hollow Knight upgrade may have fixed an important bug

As gamers, we are all very aware of an update patch that can make the game worse instead of better. No single game is more symptomatic than Monster Hunter Wilds, where seemingly every new patch that was supposed to do something positive ended up having a negative effect.

But have you heard of a patch that suddenly makes an already notoriously difficult game much more difficult? Because that's exactly what happened to the original Hollow Knight after the free PlayStation 5 upgrade.

For years, Hollow Knight had an “invincibility” bug that remained unpatched. This made the game much easier and moved the Platinum trophy from “impossible” to “mostly possible”. However, thanks to the patch in update 1.03, it is now seemingly gone according to many users.

“Good thing I was able to get the Platinum with the glitch before,” one user wrote. “Just the thought of having to fight Markoth with that horrible idea is enough to give me an aneurysm.

Why Hollow Knight: Silksong wasn't the game I wanted after all the hype

It turns out I don't need to play Hollow Knight: Silksong to fall in love with its world and characters.

Where things get particularly funny is the self-described difficulty rating moving from a 9 to a full 10 as more and more people find the glitch no longer exists.

For what it's worth, at least two people have already achieved PS5 Platinum in the time since launch. This is as phenomenal as it gets, especially considering that unlike some PS4 to PS5 upgrades, there is no automatic pop.

Jokes aside, Team Cherry wasn't against the glitch, at least we know that

As far as we know, the Cherry team was also seemingly aware of what was going on and let it pass. It's not clear why this is, but it may have something to do with speedrunners.

That said, Team Cherry has been one to mostly stand behind their notoriously difficult product. In a book that was released after the long-awaited release of Silksong, developer Ari Gibson explained some of the reasoning behind things.

“Silksong has some moments of steep difficulty – but part of allowing a higher level of freedom in the world means you have constant choices about where you go and what you do.”

Still, in the face of harsh criticism, some changes were eventually made to the game, including nerfing the flea minigame. The next patch dealt with environmental hazards, with more things built to the same level as the patch that launched.

It is currently unclear if this invincibility glitch was fixed on purpose or by accident, and if it will return. Some players are trying to reverse patch their game or looking for a physical copy to play the unpatched version. We wish them the best of luck.
