However, it struggled to gain traction with its original price of $699.99, despite featuring several improvements over the base PS5's technical capabilities.
PlayStation later released a revised PS5 Pro model along with a price increase that brought the console to $749.99. The original update focused on improving the console's power consumption and reducing its overall noise. Since then, the PS5's chief systems architect, Mark Cerny, has confirmed that the model will receive another upgrade in 2026. He said that the upgrades will specifically focus on improving the PS5 Pro's current upscaling technology and graphics prowess.

PSSR 2.0, otherwise known as PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, is now rumored to be released between January and March of this year. The news comes from Gust_FAN, a Twitter user known for sharing PlayStation leaks and deals, who tweeted the data and a few details about what the potential upgrade could include. Most notably, Gust_FAN previously tweeted accurate leaks about the slim design of the PS5 and the PS5 Pro 2024 tech presentation where the PS5 Pro model was announced.
The current update is said to increase the frame rate for games that were previously stuck at 70-80 FPS, improve the resolution of classic games, and offer improved debugging tools for game developers. The term “classic games” is believed to refer to the PS4 library, which is currently receiving select performance and visual enhancements when playing on the PS5 Pro. In addition, the update will implement a new feature that will work similarly to AMD FSR4, significantly increasing image quality and overall performance. The Twitter post did not mention whether the rumored update will come with a price increase for the PS5 Pro.
If these rumors are true, PlayStation fans should hear an official announcement from Sony sooner rather than later. The debate over whether the PS5 Pro is worth the upgrade has remained prominent among the console's gaming base. This upgrade could help convert those who are still skeptical, especially if PSSR 2.0 is as effective as AMD's FSR4. To help boost sales of the upgraded console, PlayStation could look to pair PS5 Pro upgrades with its new exclusive. Saroswhich comes out in April. Housemarque has confirmed that its upcoming title will use the capabilities of the current PS5 Pro model. However, it is not confirmed whether the game will support ray-tracing. Fans will have to wait and see if all of these rumors come true, but until then, they can look forward to a PlayStation exclusive line-up including both Saros and Wolverinein 2026.
