PlayStation has released its latest financial report, which tracks console and software sales up to September 30, 2025, and confirms that the PS5 has sold 84.2 million units over its lifetime. This moves the latest PlayStation console into the top ten best selling consoles of all time.
PS5 lifetime sales were hovering at 80.3 million before today's update added nearly four million more consoles to the total. These additional sales not only moved it to ninth place overall, but now means that the PS5 has outsold the Game Boy Advance and, perhaps more importantly, the Xbox 360.
I say more important because with the 360 now following in its footsteps, the PS5 has now surpassed every Xbox console ever made. The Xbox 360 was the pinnacle for Xbox hardware and is the studio's most successful console by a wide margin. It outsold its closest in-house competitor by nearly 30 million units, and with the Xbox Series X|S still 50 million short of where the 360 finished, the latest Xbox will never surpass it.
The PS5 still has four other PlayStations to try out and catch up
The 360 is also the closest the Xbox has ever won a generation in console sales alone, trailing the PS3 by less than four million. Speaking of which, the PS5 hasn't completely outsold the PS3 yet, but it seems very likely that it will in three months. The latest PlayStation is 3.2 million units away, and with the PS5 still selling well after five years and in the current quarter including holiday sales, it seems almost certain to overtake the PS3 by early 2026.
Of course, the GBA's sales overtaking is also impressive, but it will be a while before the PS5 surpasses Nintendo's other consoles. In fact, aside from the PS3, the PS5 now has a gap to bridge before it can continue its climb up the charts of best-selling consoles. Following the PS3, which ended its run at 87.4 million consoles sold, we come to the top seven, all of which have sold 100 million or more.
Every PlayStation home console outside of the PS3 has sold over 100 million consoles, so you have to imagine that the PS5 will eventually hit that milestone, which is a bare minimum for Sony. The PS5 currently trails the PS4 by roughly two million consoles, which sold more than 86 million consoles within five years. With the PS4 having sold 117.2 million consoles, it seems very likely that the PS5 will eventually comfortably clear 100 million consoles sold.
Even though the PS5 has now surpassed the lifetime sales of the GBA, Nintendo will be relieved that the PlayStation didn't find the PS2's other sales numbers on the back of the couch. Nintendo updated its own sales figures last week, revealing that the Switch has now sold 154.1 million consoles and counting. When it started to look like the Switch might outsell the PS2, PlayStation added another five million sales to the final tally, pushing it from 155 million to 160 million.
