For every epic clash with the divine being with the Final Fantasy series has always excelled in its quiet moments. In addition to the main story, the rich gobelin of side tasks invites players to explore the hidden lives and history of the world. These optional adventures, often overlooked by those who are in a hurry to save the day, often contain some of the strongest narratives in the whole franchise.
While some side tasks offer strong rewards, the most memorable give something more valuable: the connection with the world and its people. They remove large bets on a heroic journey and instead focus on personal tragedies, unfulfilled dreams and persistent echoes of losses.
Couple's father
Final Fantasy 6
Finding the couch's father is really an experience. After years of separation and gauneous wild education on Velta, there is no one to find what one would hope for. His father, driven by angry grief and believes that his son is a demon, refuses the couple directly.
The capable scene underlines permanent scars that has left the couple past, making him a strong moment of unfulfilled desires and tragic consequences of misunderstanding. While the Gau is most of his screen quite a comedy figure, this moment is particularly melancholic,
Anima
Final Fantasy 10
The acquisition of Yuny's final Aeon, Anima, is deeply tied to Seymour's full past. The task shows that Seyth's mother has been willing to turn into Fayth to become Aeon for her son, hoping to help him fight sin.
Raw despair and mother's victim are incredibly strong. Anima as a summons is a constant reminder of the deep, sad love that brought Seymour's mother to her tragic fate, making him a truly heartbreaking aspect of the history of the Spira.
Questline Arr Alchemist
Final Fantasy 14
The first alchemical Questline in FF14 is a powerful and emotional story focused on Alchemist Severian and his perennial effort to resurrect his late lover W'Nahja, who died during the disaster.
His efforts eventually succeeded, but their finding is tragically short. Severian's journey forces him to face the painful reality, that some losses cannot be canceled and that the real consolation is that it brings back the dead but in their memory. It is a beautifully narrated story of grief and acceptance, and is unfortunately hidden for a part of a game that so many players never deal with: crafting.
Quan's dwellings
Final Fantasy 9
A visit to Quan's dwelling is a deeply melancholic way that examines the past of Vivi and Quin. In the quiet loneliness of the caves, both characters experience the scary hallucinations of Quan, their shared guardian. For Vivi, this is a sad reminder of the short time he had with someone who took care of him before he was left alone.
For Quin, this is the moment of introspection because they think about their own way and relationship with Quan. This shared, scary memory underlines the deep loneliness of both characters and makes dwellings a powerful place of shared sadness and nostalgia.
Diabolos hunt
Final Fantasy 12
Hunting for Diabolos in FF12 is heartbreaking because of the story of the brand itself. Diabolos is revealed as a fiery chargoyle that prey for children, and many of them have become a victim in the past. Although the fight is not so difficult, it is satisfactory to conquer it, given the consequences.
Only when you are going to load your reward, do you realize that your client is actually affected by the soul of one of the many victims of Diabolos. This is another bittersweet – you brought peace, but in this process you were exposed to such sorrow.
The soul of rebirth
Final Fantasy 2
This task allows players to play as characters that died during the main story: Minwu, Scott, Josef and Ricard. Fighting the soul area of rebirth with these fallen heroes is a bittersweet experience and offers the last chance to use their skills.
It serves as a powerful tribute to their victims and allows short emotional reunion before it disappears again. It is a suitable end of the story filled with tragedies and purely bitter.
Business Places 2
Final Fantasy 16
This seemingly harmless chain of tasks turns quickly and forces clive to face the grim reality of the lives of the wearers. What begins as a simple task to help the fighting family escalates and reveals more systemic abuse and tragic fates that await unfortunate enough to be born with magic.
The task then escalates to a fully developed disaster, which ends with an extremely heartbreaking result for your questgiver. This avoids a new game+ runs.
SORROW OF WERLYT
Final Fantasy 14
This story focused on air raids immerses in the tragic history of weapons – powerful machines designed to combat the primals. He focuses on the past of Gaius van Baelsar and the heartbreaking fate of those he met as a black wolf during his days, people who were used as living components for these weapons.
Moral uncertainties and immense suffering caused in the name of defense create a deeply sad narration, exploring the topics of victims, humanity and war costs. The battles are fine, but cutscenes were my peaks.
