Adventure comics issue #210 is the first issue of Krypto the Superdog. In this issue, readers will see Superboy reunited with his forgotten pet Krypt. Although a bit of a handful, the pair eventually manage to work together, with Krypto donning a red cape and flying over Lana Lang to help convince her that Clark Kent can't be Superboy.

Although Krypto doesn't necessarily save the day with Superboy and may cause more problems than he solves, this story is a true classic and captures the meaning of Man's Best Friend. In the end, Krypto decides to leave Earth, saving Clark from a difficult decision and showing what a good pet and friend he really is.

In 2003, Superboy moved in with Martha and Jonothan Kent in Smallville. Superman hoped that by living with the Kents, his clone would learn to be comfortable around humans and be surrounded by the most supportive people he had ever met.

When Superman figures out that Conner is struggling with living in Smallville and needs a friend, he decides to give Krypto to Conner as a gift. He does this in hopes that they will connect, bond and form a friendship similar to that of Clark and Krypto. Although they struggle to get along at first, Conner and Krypto become best friends, and Conner even takes Krypto to Titan Tower with him when he's away from Smallville.

While Clark Kent and Lois Lane are on a leisurely stroll in Metropolis, they are interrupted by the legendary Superman villain Mongul, accompanied by his sister (in this iteration) Mongal. Superman has his hands full and Mongul alone is enough of a challenge for the Man Of Steel. Luckily, Krypto is there to help, and before Clark can react, Krypto attacks.

While Superman deals with Mongul, Krypto takes on Mongul alone. This is probably one of Krypt's most impressive feats, using his Kryptonian abilities such as laser vision, super speed, and super strength, Krypt manages to hold off Mongul until Superman delivers the final blow. Although this comic ends with Superman chastising his furry friend for acting so rashly, readers agree that Krypto was doing what all good pets would do to protect their owner.


2 Faithful Protector (Action Comics Volume 2 – #13)

Krypto protects Superman from criminals in the Phantom Zone

Action comic 2nd part #13 shows the true level of loyalty Krypto has for his best friend. When the disgraced Kryptonian doctor Xa-Du tries to break out of the Phantom Zone, he tries to attack the young Kal-El. Without hesitation, Krypto jumps into action and stops Xa-Du, while he unfortunately ends up in the Phantom Zone as a result.

Many years later, when Xa-Du successfully escapes, he manages to send Superman to the Phantom Zone. While there, Superman is attacked by Krypton's imprisoned criminals, but after all this time, Krypto is still there waiting. He successfully fends off the attackers and sacrifices his chances of freedom to save his best friend once again. Superman would eventually return to the Phantom Zone to free the Krypt and reunite with his long lost friend.

Action Comics issue 583 is the conclusion “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow” story line. In this comic, Superman and his allies take on some of The Man of Steel's greatest foes. Seeking refuge in the Fortress of Solitude, the heroes find themselves under attack from the likes of the mind-controlled Lex Luthor, Kryptonite Man, and the Legion of Supervillains.

When one of Superman's most dangerous adversaries, Kryptonite Man, sneaks into the Fortress of Solitude, Krypto must deal with the threat alone. In a truly selfless act, Krypto makes the ultimate sacrifice. Even though he knew that approaching Kryptonite Man would weaken him, Krypto attacked anyway, giving up his own life to save that of his best friend.
