Late November 7th Twitch issued a second apology for failing to protect popular content creator Emily Beth 'Emir' Schunk from being attacked at TwitchCon in San Diego. Although Twitch said it would make a donation to nonprofits focused on addressing sexual harassment, fans and creators weren't happy with the streaming service's latest statement on social media.

During TwitchCon 2025 at the San Diego Convention Center, Emiru was harassed and assaulted by an unidentified attendee during a meet and greet. The alleged assailant was only caught hours later, after the incident had already happened. Emiru later said in an October stream that she filed a police report to charge the TwitchCon attacker with assault and harassment, and called out Twitch for their lack of security and accountability. In response to the incident, various content creators and Twitch users expressed overwhelming support for Emir and her leadership.

Twitch again apologizes for failing to protect Emir

Twitch made an announcement about Emir Assault's TwitchCon

While Twitch had already released a comment on Emiru's assault in late October, the streaming service released a follow-up statement on social media. Twitch said in a post on November 7th on X that he was unable to keep Emir safe and stop the attack on TwitchCon in the first place. Twitch said it will recognize Emiru's advocacy by donating to non-profit organizations that work to combat sexual assault and harassment, but has not released any further details about its future plans in this regard.

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy released a separate statement about X, saying he failed to communicate clearly about Emir and the state of convention security during an interview he gave during TwitchCon. Following up on his previous apology for TwitchCon's shortcomings, Clancy said the streaming service will review its security protocols at TwitchCon and improve its communication processes with its users. Reactions to Twitch and Clancy's latest social media posts, however, have been largely negative. Several users and content creators said that while donating to the nonprofit is a good move, Twitch didn't do enough to instill trust in the brand after TwitchCon. Other users called for Clancy to resign as CEO of Twitch for his admitted failures in the TwitchCon incident.

At the time of writing, Emiru has not publicly commented on the incident at TwitchCon and has not streamed on Twitch since October 25th. Only time will tell what changes Twitch and TwitchCon will make to keep their users and creators safe.
