Anyone scrolling through X or Reddit over the past year was probably expecting one big reveal at The Game Awards 2025, but rumors and the highly anticipated Assassin's Creed: Black Flag the remake was a no-show. The night was packed with a lot of big announcements, including the unveiling of a brand new one Star Wars game by Casey Hudson and Larian's next Divinity game. However, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag the remake still pretends it doesn't exist, as if it hasn't already shown its hand.
Perhaps a second after Leon Kennedy's return Resident Evil Requiem (which was also confirmed at The Game Awards 2025), Black flag remake has been one of the industry's worst-kept secrets for quite some time now. Nearly two years of rumors, speculation and leaks led to what was arguably the best possible timing for a reveal at this year's awards ceremony, yet the opportunity was neglected. At the very least, a teaser confirming its existence might have been fine – unless Ubisoft decided to overshadow it once it's ready, because the world is already so sure it's real.
The Black Flag remake has been the industry's worst-kept secret for quite some time now
The leak cycle for the long heralded Black flag The remake has been in the works for months, but one of the latest hints came when the Pan European Game Information (PEGI) panel briefly listed the title as Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynchronized rated 18+, practically announcing without notice that something is coming. Previously, Reddit user thequality revealed in a post that a piece of text mentioning the remake was spotted in the localization table Assassin's Creed Shadowsbut the leaks weren't even half of it. The Black flag A remake has been on the radar since early 2024, when industry insiders claimed that Ubisoft was entertaining the idea of remaking the older Assassin's Creed games.

Aside from rumors and leaks suggesting existence Black flag remake, others have pointed out how it could change the original game, as well as the potential launch window. First, it was reported that the modern segments that tied earlier Assassin's Creed games into the current Assassin versus Templar storyline were omitted and instead focused directly on Edward Kenway's pirate-era adventures. Second, various leaks have indicated that it is being talked about Black flag the remake will arrive sometime before March 2026, with some insiders even pointing to the week of March 23rd as a potential release window.
The Game Awards 2025 was the best possible timing to reveal the Black Flag remake
If a March 2026 release window has been announced, it is said AC4: Black Flag remake is true, then The Game Awards 2025 was the best possible timing for a reveal of some kind. Especially considering how much more likely its existence is with each leak, it would make sense for Ubisoft to at least give fans a nod to TGA 2025 — one that says, “Yes, it's real.” A simple 30 second teaser with little more than a title card would do. At this point, it's like playing hide-and-seek with a toddler, where the seeker knows where the toddler is hiding but pretends not to for the child's amusement.
A delayed reveal might be in Ubisoft's best interest
Perhaps it really is in the developer's best interest to keep this thing under wraps until it's ready, in light of how much scrutiny it's been under in recent years. This silence can be frustrating, but it's also very much on brand for Ubisoft, which is increasingly cautious about how and when it shows its hand. After so many games from Ubisoft have been dissected years in advance, a surprise reveal or even an announcement of an imminent launch would give the developers much more control over the conversation. In that context, skipping The Game Awards 2025 seems less like a missed opportunity and more like a way to avoid unrealistic expectations before the game even has a chance to speak for itself.
Until Ubisoft finally admits it, they say Black flag the remake is in this weird limbo where everyone is convinced it's real but no one can officially talk about it. The only downside to this may be that the longer the limbo lasts, the more pressure the developer will be under once an eventual disclosure occurs. Whether the reveal comes with traditional marketing or a sudden announcement closer to its release, one thing seems inevitable at this point. Assassin's Creed: Black Flag is (probably) coming back, and Ubisoft is simply choosing when to stop pretending otherwise.
