Umamusume angers fans with a new AI studio, but assumes he'll still be using AI Art

Last week, Cygames, the creators of Umamusume: Pretty Derby, announced the formation of Cygames AI Studio, Inc. The studio was created to advance “AI technology that creators can use safely and securely, drawing on the experience it has developed in game development.”

This new company promises to “build a unique creative cycle that goes beyond simply improving the efficiency and expanding the creativity of creators,” but as AI continues to (correctly) drag itself through the mud, fans of Umamusume have taken a stand.

Social media has been inundated with gamers unhappy that the creators of one of 2025's breakout hits have strayed to the dark side, so much so that Cygames has issued a confusing statement suggesting that they respect the creators of their games but can still go ahead and use generative AI.

Developer Umamusume vows never to use generative AI 'without prior notice'

“Over the past few days, we have received numerous comments from many of you expressing anger and disappointment,” the statement begins.

PETA is known for its provocative messages.

“We would like to take this opportunity to state that art made from generative artificial intelligence is not used in our products,” the studio continues. “Furthermore, we will not implement generative artificial intelligence into our products without prior notice. We value those who love games, as well as the dignity, passion and heart of the creators and artists who act as the architects of gaming culture.”

This part of the statement sounds an awful lot like, “We understand you don't like the AI, and we respect the people who make the games, but we'll still go ahead and use it. But don't worry, we'll let you know when we do.”

As if to reinforce the fact that past Cygames didn't use AI, he says, “The art for all current Cygames games and other products is created from the technical know-how and handiwork of our many employees.” But again, he refuses to rule out its use in the future.

The mixed message statement ends with Cygames deeply apologizing “for causing so much grief and anguish to our beloved fans” and promising to “honor the creator.” But I'm not sure how refusing to rule out the use of AI does that.

Of course, this statement did not sit well with the players. “You say it won't be used in your products. So where exactly would you use it then? What's the point of starting this company?” Altair298 said on Twitter. Gravesicle added, “'Without notice,' so they'll still do it.”
