VA Rare Move, The Band Tool has licensed the song to a new upcoming Dungeons & Dragons RPG

Legendary rock band Tool has surprisingly acquired a license for one of its songs Wizarda brand new RPG coming from Wizards of the Coast and Invoke Studios. This was announced at The Game Awards Dungeons & Dragons The game teases monsters, magic, and a dark tone that was enhanced by Tool's music used in the reveal trailer.

Tool has a history of being incredibly selective when it comes to licensing their music. Maynard frontman James Keenan's side projects, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, have been licensed across various film and television projects, but when it comes to Tool, it's a completely different story. The band has to make sure whatever project the song is used for fits, and Wizards of the Coast are probably pretty pleased that Tool agreed to use one of their most popular songs. Larian's next game is Divinity and it will be even bigger than Baldur's Gate 3

From Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian Studios comes “Divinity,” the next title in the Divinity series, revealed at the Game Awards 2025.

What instrumental track was used in the trailer?

The Wizard the trailer opens with a sprawling tower surrounded by mountains as the opening bass line for “Forty Six & 2” begins to play. It kicks off the reveal in a way that immediately grabs attention, and from there the whole energy of the trailer kicks up a notch. Images of smoke billowing through the interior of a castle, a lone eyeball sitting on a stone floor, and a fountain surrounded by a glowing purple spell set the scene, while the trailer leads to the introduction of protagonist Kaatri, who uses her magic to defeat the undead, vampires, and other beasts. It's incredibly cinematic and the addition of Tool's “Forty Six & 2” really adds to the drama of the reveal.

Licensing isn't exactly a new tool in video games, but it's been around for a really long time

  • Three Tool songs were released in 2008 Guitar Hero World Tour

  • The songs were “Schism”, “Parabola” and “Vicarious”.

From Guitar hero is a rhythm game, it makes sense for the band to use their music for it, but Tool and Dungeons and Dragons is a pairing that many didn't expect, especially since the band has such a reputation for being so odd. Besides Guitar hero and Dungeons and DragonsThe tool also enabled movies and TV series like Escape from LA, Captain America: The First Avenger, Beavis and Butt-head, List of Terminals: Dark Wolfand Alien: Earth license various songs. Now that Dungeons and Dragons spin-off Wizard has been added to this list, it will be interesting to see if Wizards of the Coast can license more of Tool's music for future trailers, be it more Wizard or a fresh, as yet unannounced game.

The tool isn't just selective about music licensing. For years, the band refused to be featured on streaming platforms. However, that changed in 2019 when Tool finally agreed to bring their music catalog to streaming.

Hard to say, really. For a band that has been around for 35 years, there have been very few instances of Tool having their music used commercially. More Dungeons and Dragons trailers featuring Tool songs would definitely be exciting, but the band is bound to continue to keep many songs close at hand. Wizard of the Coast Wizard is a strong point for the band, especially with the visuals in the trailer, and while the Tool song makes almost anything even cooler than it already is, it'll probably be a while before another song is featured in a game trailer.
