Valve's AI disclosure requirements have changed dramatically

Valve has amended its mandate to require developers who use artificial intelligence to post notices on their games' Steam pages. The change reflects a narrower definition of what is worth mentioning, improving on certain deployments while effectively nullifying the potential relevance of others.

The change comes loud and clear via Valve's own developer form, which means developers see the site front and center when working with Steam to launch games.

As Simon Carless, founder of GameDiscoverCo – and then reported on the excellent GameDeveloper.com – noted, Valve clarified that developers don't have to count “artificial intelligence-powered tools” when considering whether they need to include a disclaimer. In other words, code support software and the like are completely excluded.

The difference is structural.

On the other hand, generative AI is of course an immediate reason for audience notice. As stated in the release form, “AI generates content for the game”. This especially applies to marketing materials, even the store page itself. Additionally, “AI content generated during gameplay” still fits the bill, including “images, audio, text and other content.”

It is up to us as individuals to analyze how we feel about these things, but if your hard line is against no Whatever the use of artificial intelligence, you will no longer be informed about it – if indeed you ever were. How many times have games like Call of Duty (heh) been said? We'll see where this all goes, but I suppose it's worth noting for those unfamiliar: these “AI-powered tools” are incredibly common at this point. In my opinion, they are a world apart from generative AI, but then again, you do.
