There are a few surprises though, as The Veilguard also brings a pair of favorite companions.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is out now, and after a decade of waiting, fans are wasting no time. Many are already working their way through the story and seeing some familiar faces along the way.
Spoilers ahead for Dragon Age: The Veilguard.Unsurprisingly, BioWare brought back some old characters for The Veilguard. This includes several fan favorite companions that were completely left out of the promotional material, so it's a nice surprise for fans.
Fan-favorite companions return in Dragon Age: The Veilguard
In the main story, Dragon Age: The Veilguard players encounter both Isabel and Dorian. They look a little different, given the ten-year time jump between Inquisition and Veilguard, but we see the two still knocking.
In fact, if you choose the Lords of Fortune background, Isabela will be your faction's contact, so your tower would know her before the story begins. Our favorite pirate queen sure kept herself busy between games.
Then there are the returning characters we already knew about. Varric and Solas are the most obvious as they appear from the very beginning of the game. There's also an Inquisitor that returning players can recreate to look like the one from the last game and enter some of their options. And of course, as revealed in one of the trailers, Morrigan is back, now with a slight wardrobe change.
It's impressive that we have as many returning characters as we do, considering that implementing them in a way that respects our gameplay from previous games would be very difficult. That's because, for the first time in the series, The Veilguard isn't importing our entire world state, it's just asking for the three decisions made in Inquisition. This means we can't say anything about our Wardens and Hawkes, making it harder to bring back characters who might have completely different fates.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is out now and available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the long-awaited fourth game in BioWare's fantasy RPG series formerly known as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. The direct sequel to Inquisition focuses on red lyrium and Solas, the aforementioned Dread Wolf.
