Welcome to Demon School! The new episode of Iruma-kun gives the Invisible Boy a second chance

The following contains spoilers for Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-Kun Season 4 Episode 1, “The Other Demon in the Misfit Class”, now streaming on Crunchyroll.

The spring 2026 anime season is off to a great start with the return of some great isekai anime such as Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun. Part of what makes up Iruma-kun so effective is how it actually focuses a little less on well-worn isekai tropes and more about compelling everyday narratives in a fantasy setting. The new season premiere episode “The Other Demon in the Misfit Class” is a good example of this. The story may be isekai, but it hardly feels that way when themes like self-expression and belonging are at the core of this episode.

From the very beginning, Iruma-kun the anime was about Iruma Suzuki's efforts to not stand out while making something of herself at the Babyls school for young demons. His character was pleasantly conflicted, as his unusual methods and human perspective eventually made him an outstanding star, and now it's Purson Soi's turn. He is a hidden student of the Misfit Class, one of the most invisible demons in the entire Netherworld realm. He too will soon become a star, but only if he can find his place in the Misfit Class and escape his family's strict rules.

Overall, the season 4 debut episode is strong, with “The Other Demon in the Misfit Class” in one of them. Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kunthe greatest power. Admittedly, this anime is pretty fun when the characters fight, which makes it an isekai My Hero Academiabut Iruma has more to do than fight monsters or pass physical exams. The best battles in Iruma-kun they are personal, with this anime slowly and surely advancing the personal arcs of everyone in the Misfit class. Students like Asmodeus Alice and Shax Lead have all changed for the better, and now it's Purson Soi's turn.

Being invisible on purpose, Purson Soi never stood out among the strongest Demon Babyls, but that is changing now, and for all the right reasons. The main story of this episode and the inspiration for its title is how Purson Soi finally gets some attention and just in time for the upcoming music festival. It works on multiple levels to make the episode entertaining, starting with Purson Soi hiding in plain sight this whole time. In the new Season 4 episode, she gets an endgame reveal with hilarious and surprisingly heartfelt results that make her an instant but special presence among all these younger demons.

Luckily, the new Purson Soi finally making her official debut isn't all the episode does. The gag is fine, but the crux of the matter is Soia's internal struggles as a likable demon boy. He can't easily secure his presence, and his family's rules actually forbid it, so he feels trapped and lonely. His social skills are stunted as a result, and he fears he can't connect with his classmates, and worse, the other demons are too pushy about him. However, no one is a bully; it's a wonderful story of simple misunderstandings and how they can be corrected. That's what Iruma Suzuki is here for.

This episode gets stronger when Iruma is the only one who truly understands Soi, which not only helps Soi come out of his shell, but also reinforces what makes Iruma so endearing. He is Babyls' only human student, and thus the only student with serious empathy and kindness. Demons are selfish and aggressive by nature, but Purson Soi doesn't need that here.

Iruma is once again a personal hero, saving Soi in the same way he emotionally saved his other classmates, and it's a promising start for both this new season and Soi's arc. Soi is perfectly relatable to anyone who feels invisible or unimportant, and Iruma is relatable to viewers who also have a big heart and lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it.

It's no coincidence that Purson Soi plays the trumpet to vent his pent-up desire to talk to people, as the entire Abnormal Class stares at a competitive music festival in the near future. Even the most powerful bloodline magic might not help here, as music is about expression and art, not combat, and that means the demon students face a creative challenge. Irum thrives in such contexts, so it's up to his classmates to put their aggressive ways aside for once. That alone promises great comedy and class growth, but above all, there are some meaningful stakes.

Some of the most famous anime series from the 2000s didn't have the best start and became popular later.

The bigger stakes are the ranks, with many Abnormal Class students needing to move up one or even two ranks in order to continue using the Royal One class. The personal stakes are mostly for Purson Soi himself, who faces both pressure and an opportunity to finally express himself and gain attention instead of being invisible as usual. This may be completely set up in Episode 1, but it's a meaningful setup with rich promises, and that's good enough for now.

Season 4 will be a whopping 25 episodes long, so it's okay for the debut episode to slow things down a bit as the next arc takes shape in everyone's heads. The fun stakes and Purson Soi's emotional quest are enough to get this episode off to a good start in season 4, even if it doesn't exactly blow isekai fans away.
