This article was updated by Andrea Tram on March 5, 2026 to discuss Fire/Fairy following the reveal of Pokémon Winds and Waves. It was first published on October 8, 2023.
One of the most unique posts in the main line was a recent one Pokemon Scarlet and Violetwhich not only broke away from the classic formula in many ways, but also introduced a lot of new and powerful Pokémon, some of which have new type combinations. Pokemon games have a lot to offer when new generations drop, especially for those fans who are excited to get pets with new Pokemon type combos offering different strategies in battle. Although not all combinations of types in Pokemon games are powerful to the point where some of them are borderline unusable, a Fire/Fairy type creature would most likely be OP for many reasons.
Among the unused v-type combos Pokemon There are several games that players have talked about for a long time because of how powerful or simply unique in design they would be, such as the fan-favorite Bug/Dragon type that has yet to see the light of day. Some of them would also make sense on existing mons, like Cofagrigus with Ghost and Rock or Yanmega with Bug and Dragon. Although the Fire/Fairy evolution for Fuecoco in Gen 9 was originally leaked, it was revealed to be fan art, but the concept remains and Pokemon winds and waves should be used, especially after Pokemon Legends: ZA No.

Here is a type chart for Pokemon FireRed & LeafGreen that you can use to calculate damage and become a real Pokemon!
Why Pokemon's Unused Fire/Fairy Type Combo would be OP
Some of the best combo types Pokemon games don't necessarily have the best attack, but are able to take hits due to their durability, immunity, or few weaknesses, while the opposite can be true for a “strike first” playstyle. A Fire/Fairy type would have a good balance between the two, with only four weaknesses but a total of eight resistances and one immunity, all while being able to hit seven types for super effective damage.

This is especially important in the context of Pokémon Winds and Waves' Pombon, which would be a good fit for the first ever Fire/Fairy Pokémon in terms of design, and perhaps its inspiration. It is said that Pombon can evolve into a creature inspired by the Balinese Barong, a guardian of good who fights the Demon Queen.
With a combination of Fire and Fairy, the Pokémon would be able to hit the following types for double STAB damage:
-
Fighting
-
Bug
-
Steel
-
Grass
-
Ice
-
Dragon
-
Dark
Assuming he doesn't have moves from any other type, only Fire would withstand both. Defensively speaking, a Fire/Fairy type Pokémon would be weak and resistant to:
-
Poison (2x damage taken)
-
Ground (2x damage taken)
-
Rock (2x Ripped Damage)
-
Water (2x damage taken)
-
Fighting (50% damage taken)
-
Fire (50% damage taken)
-
Grass (50% damage taken)
-
Ice (50% damage taken)
-
Dark (50% damage taken)
-
Fairy (50% damage taken)
-
Bug (25% damage taken)
-
Dragon (no damage)
Fairy is one of the best types in Pokemon on its own, as well as Fire, meaning they can be quite powerful when combined.
Why Pokemon Winds and Waves Adding a Fire/Fairy Pokemon can destroy competing VGCs
The fact that Fairy-type Pokemon deal double damage to dragon pets and also take no damage from dragon moves is one of their best features, especially considering that legendary and pseudo-legendary Pokemon are often dragon-type. The same goes for Dark-types, which are often dominant in any meta due to priority moves, Prankster, Foul Play, and other similar tricks, with Fairy resisting these attacks and also dealing double damage to such Pokémon. On the other hand, Fire is great for covering against Steel, which is normally one of Fairy Pokemon's biggest problems, and it's also Burn's signature type as a status condition.
A Fire/Fairy-type Pokémon that can burn opponents, deal with powerful Steel and Dragon types, and has many advantages in battle, it will likely be one of the best of the series, depending on its stats and overall build. For example, a Normal/Steel Pokemon would be OP when it comes to defense, but would struggle on the offensive side of things, which is something a Fire/Fairy creature wouldn't worry too much about. A great way to introduce this type would be to give it Gen 10 Pokemon Fire starter games, as first partner mons tend to have decently balanced stats, abilities, and movepools.
