The Xbox Game Pass the library expanded by Final Fantasy 2— specifically its latest remaster, which many Square Enix fans consider the definitive version of the polarizing title. The JRPG comes just ahead of the expected February 2026 Xbox Game Pass Wave 1 lineup announcement.
Since its first launch in 1988 Final Fantasy 2 it's been retouched and re-released half a dozen times, first jumping from the original Famicom/NES to WonderSwan Color. It later appeared on the PlayStation 1 as a component Final Fantasy Origins and Game Boy Advance Inc Final Fantasy 1 and 2: Dawn of Souls. A PSP remake was released in 2007, shortly after a J2ME-powered demake was launched for select feature phones, albeit only in Japan. The game was last revised as part of the acclaimed Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection including the first six entries in the franchise.
Xbox Game Pass adds an Open World game with an 83 critical score
Xbox Game Pass marks its first triple release day in 2026 by introducing three new titles with impressive review scores.
Xbox Game Pass is doubling its selection of Final Fantasy games
Latest version Final Fantasy 2 is available to Xbox Game Pass users starting today, February 3, at all tiers except the base XGP Essential tier. It's the third title to join Microsoft's subscription catalog this month, and the 21st this year. It arrives less than a month later Final Fantasy 1 Pixel Remaster was added to Xbox Game Pass on January 8. On that note, it seems likely that the service may continue to receive one remaster per month until the entire Square Enix collection is part of its library.

Some fans have long since included Final Fantasy 2 among the weakest entries from the early, pre-3D era of the franchise. This reputation is largely attributed to its unconventional progression system, which replaces traditional leveling with a less intuitive usage-based stat growth mechanism. The system encourages repetitive actions and can lead to uneven character development without careful management. While the game remains polarizing, the consensus among Square Enix fans is that it does Pixel Remaster is its definitive release thanks to extensive balance changes and various quality-of-life improvements, including a modern user interface.

In related news Madden NFL 24 is scheduled to leave the service on February 15, according to the recently updated “Leaving Soon” section of the Xbox Game Pass web directory, as well as the Xbox Cloud Gaming site, which pulls catalog data from the same backend. That said, a single title would make for an uncharacteristically short list of departures, suggesting that another mid-month removal may be announced alongside the February 2026 Wave 1 lineup reveal.
