Yoshi-P reportedly confirms Final Fantasy 14 Switch 2 version

Final Fantasy 14 is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, according to player reports from a recent interview with game director Yoshi-P. The developer has previously been known to stop by for casual chats with the in-game community over the New Year's holiday, and did so again to celebrate 2026 in Final Fantasy 14.

Final Fantasy 14 is starting to prepare for the release of the next expansion after Dawntrail. The game went through a bit of a rough patch, Dawntrail reception was mixed among fans, repeated DDoS attacks and delays in promised updates. However, players are hopeful that the game is moving in the right direction.

According to reports from Japanese server Pandaemonium, the character Yoshi-P checked in and visited Costa Del Sol to answer some questions as the new year has already started in Japan. Players were allowed to ask questions, and he picked a handful to answer, confirming interesting things about what's next in the game. However, when asked if there is a Switch version Final Fantasy 14 will be released, he simply replied, “Please look forward to the Switch version,” seemingly confirming that it was happening.

Switch version 2 Final Fantasy 14 has been discussed and rumored for some time, but nothing official has been confirmed before. In 2024, Yoshi-P suggested that the version Final Fantasy 14 on the Switch 2 it might be possible, and in 2025 he revealed that Switch 2 owners could be getting some good news in the future. He was quoted as saying, “We are doing our best to make sure that happens,” but asked for more time. Judging by a new message from the developer, it seems the port has now been confirmed.

At the moment, gamers seem to have mixed reactions to the news that the MMORPG could be coming to the Switch 2. Some have expressed concern that the tie-in to the console generation could lead to issues with support and upgrading the game in the future, as it has in the past with some titles including Final Fantasy 11 and Final Fantasy 14. However, many have expressed excitement about being able to play the game on the go on a portable device like the Switch 2. Final Fantasy 14 Mobile now exists, currently not available in the west. Moreover, when it is possible to play Final Fantasy 14 on the Steam Deck, it's highly likely that more players own a Switch 2, given its explosive popularity since launch.

What else is coming to Final Fantasy 14?

While the Switch news is exciting, it's not the only thing Yoshi-P discussed. Yoshi-P teased a lot of features in the works, such as the ability to customize character animations. Viera players will get access to Cloud's existing hairstyle, glamor slot boosts will be added after the housing update, and details on the upcoming Beastmaster job will be discussed in the next live letter. Furthermore, the team is considering updating the coloring system, possibly updating character creation, and the buff limit may be increased. All of that could potentially change, though, especially since it hasn't come in the form of an official announcement via the normal Square Enix and FFinal Fantasy 14 channels.

In the meantime, players can check out the Heavensturn event that started earlier on December 31st in the game. Final Fantasy 14 players can engage in a small questline to unlock new minions and furniture for their playhouses, apartments, or free societies. But the deal runs until January 15, 2026, so there's no rush.
