This article contains spoilers from the Jujutsu Kaisen Shinjuku Showdown Arc.

Key things

  • Yuji Itadori gained significant power-ups in the Shinjuku Showdown, including mastering the Simple Domain technique.
  • Despite defeating Sukuna, Yuji is not yet as strong as him, but has the potential to become the next Sukuna with more training.
  • As Yuji matures, his control over cursed energy and mastery of various techniques will likely make him comparable to Sukuna in power.

Yuji Itadori is the main character Jujutsu Kaisen and certainly a monstrously powerful individual. Even though Yuji wasn't that strong for the vast majority of the series, the final arc, Shinjuku Showdown, saw Yuri receive a plethora of power-ups one after the other, essentially leveling him up to a very high level.

Megumi was absent throughout the final fight against Sukuna. He never reached his full potential at JJK.

In fact, a case can be made for Yuji to be the strongest wizard in the entire world, given that both Sukuna and Gojo are now gone. However, fans also know that Yuji is not yet a finished product. Yuji still has a long way to go and many skills and techniques to master if he is to become a legendary wizard like his mentor. That said, there's already enough groundwork to support the idea that Yuji will grow tremendously in terms of power and become the next Sukuna in JJK.

Yuji's big growth in Shinjuku clearing

  • Yuji trained hard before the Shinjuku match
  • Yuji awakened his latent powers

Yuji grew greatly in the Shinjuku Showdown Arc of Jujutsu Kaisen. In fact, its growth occurred in two different ways. The first way was the training he did just before the Shinjuku showdown. Using the body-swapping technique and direct training under his brother Choso, Yuji gained mastery in many arts. By switching bodies, Kusakabe taught him many powerful abilities such as barrier techniques and of course the most important of them was the Simple Domain. Yuji learned this technique and it allowed him to protect himself from Sukun's domain extension and later serve as the basis for Yuji to create the domain extension. That's certainly not all. Yuji also trained under Chos after consuming death image number 4 to 9. This gave him access to Blood Manipulation, although his control over it is not that good yet.

Did this brat just learn a reverse cursed technique? – Sukuna

Still, Yuji could at least heal himself more effectively with blood manipulation, meaning it helped his strength greatly. Yuji could also use powers like Convergence and Supernova, but these abilities required Yuji to seek help from his brother Chos in order to use them properly.

Unsurprisingly, that's not all Yuji has learned. He also trained with Yuta Okkotsu and improved his general level of strength and efficiency with cursed energy. Yuji also trained with Gojo Satoru, but what exactly he learned from this training is still unknown.

In addition to the training Yuji received before the Shinjuku Showdown, fans also know that he gained major power-ups in the arc itself. He showed the abilities he learned during the timeskip and was incredibly effective against Sukuna. Against the King of Curses, his latent potential was awakened, giving him access to the cursed Shrine Technique. As fans know, the Shrine is a deadly ability that allows you to slice and dice your targets, and this ability was also awakened in Yuji, although his version of the shrine was slightly different from Sukuna's.

Yuji used the magnificent power of the domain expansion and thus the battle against Sukuna ended. Yuji destroyed it inside his domain and ripped it from Megumi's body, essentially getting rid of it forever.

How can Yuji be the next sukuna

Yuji Itadori has potential equal to Sukuna

Yuji Itadori was at a very high level in the Shinjuku match. There is no doubt that Yuji is at the level of a special wizard right now. He has many incredible abilities and his fighting instincts are better than the vast majority that fans have seen in the story.

This must mean that Yuji Itadori has the same potential as Sukuna! – Uraum

After all, he is the wizard who defeated Sukuna. But fans shouldn't be cocky. It should be abundantly clear to all readers that Yuji Itadori would not be able to defeat Sukuna alone. In fact, all the wizards would have died a horrible death if Gojo hadn't drastically weakened Sukuna during the battle against him. Even after that, Sukuna fought many wizards and they kept him busy on many occasions, allowing Yuji to land some of his powerful blows. Yuji could have died on multiple occasions in Shinjuku Showdown, and if Sukuna hadn't been thoroughly nerfed, Yuji would never have won the battle. This is clear to all fans. Right now, Yuji is very strong, but not as strong as Sukuna.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Why Sukun's Return Makes Sense

Sukuna has the potential to return to JJK if the series ever gets a sequel.

However, that doesn't mean Yuji can never be as strong as Sukuna. In fact, fans already know that Yuji may become the next Sukuna. When the true connection between Sukuna and Yuji was revealed, it was made clear by Urauma that Yuji had the potential to be as strong as Sukuna. This is because Yuji is basically Sukun's twin son, making Sukun his uncle.

The only difference is that Sukuna consumed his twin and he then reincarnated as Jin Itadori. There is a connection between these two individuals that transcends time, and this connection, along with the fact that Sukuna took up residence in Yuji's body, giving him access to his most powerful abilities and deadly moves, lead to Yuji becoming one of the most powerful wizards of all time. It's obvious that Yuji has all the tools he could possibly need to become as strong as he is, and all he needs to do is put in the effort and improve drastically.

Yuji's power as an adult wizard

Right now, Yuji is still in high school. However, a few years later, when Yuji graduates, he becomes an incredibly powerful wizard. By the time Yuji reaches adulthood, his power will reach a whole new level. Yuji would improve his physical strength even more, and if that wasn't enough, he would also improve his control over cursed energy. He would most likely improve his control over the Reverse Cursed Technique and increase its effectiveness even more. Additionally, fans should keep in mind that Yuji will most likely master blood manipulation as an adult, meaning that Convergence and all the other techniques that come with it will come naturally to him. Yuji would also master the Shrine to a level where it could potentially be comparable to Sukuna, especially since Yuji has muscle memory since Sukuna remains inside his body.

His control over his domain would most likely improve as well, and Yuji would also learn about their powerful abilities such as domain amplification and potentially new barrier techniques as well. If Yuji acquires all these abilities, then it is possible for him to be on Sukuna's level. Still, in a proper 1v1 between the two, Yuji will be the underdog, but at least fans know he has the potential to be the next Sukuna, even if it's just power.

The final chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen, JJK 271, was finally released on September 29, 2024. Fans can read the series on Manga Plus and Shonen Jump apps.
