Nintendo-owned developer Monolith Soft has revealed more information about the team's work The Legend of Zelda series while hinting at plans for the future. Since 1986, The Legend of Zelda the franchise was second only to Mario in terms of its importance to Nintendo. For 40 years, the series has hosted some of the most acclaimed games ever made, from SNES classics such as A link to the pastto modern masterpieces such as Breath of the Wild.
Future Zelda has been a major question in recent years. 2023 The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was the final open-world entry in the series, followed by Top Down Echoes of wisdom in 2024 and a spin-off Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment in 2025. Remake Ocarina of Time is rumored for Nintendo Switch 2 this year, but Nintendo has yet to confirm the project's existence.
“Absolutely Furious” ex-Nintendo PR exec comments on company's response to latest Switch 2 leaks
A former Nintendo employee claims that the company is probably very upset about leaks of Switch 2 games, including the Ocarina of Time remake.
Monolith Soft's future with Zelda
He detailed his history on the new Monolith Soft website, which he worked on as a co-developer The Legend of Zelda franchise. The team started working on Zelda starting in 2011 Heavenly Swordalong with the primary development team at Nintendo EAD. This was a few years after Monolith Soft was acquired by Nintendo in 2007. Following the closure of this project, Monolith Soft continued to serve as Zelda support studio while also working on Xenoblade series. The website details how the team got involved A connection between worlds, Breath of the Wildand Tears of the Kingdom.
The Monolith Soft website clearly states that the development team will do this to continue working as a support studio for the future Zelda games. Unfortunately, it doesn't offer any details on what exactly the team is working on. It is possible that the studio will help with this Ocarina of Time remake, if that project actually exists. However, Nintendo also leaned on Grezzo as a Zelda co-developer and this team previously worked on the 3DS version Ocarina of Time. It's possible that Grezzo is working with Nintendo EAD members on the remake, while Monolith Soft is working on the actual sequel Tears of the Kingdom.
Nintendo tends to keep their development teams under wraps for as long as possible. Fans are often able to guess which studios are involved in the projects, but confirmation usually doesn't come until players can pass in-game credits. Given that history, it's possible that fans won't know what Zelda Monolith Soft is in the works until release.
