3 new Xbox consoles are now available for purchase and they come with improvements

Key things

  • Microsoft has launched three new Xbox Series X/S models, namely the 2TB Galaxy Black Series X, the 1TB All-Digital White Series X and the 1TB White Series S.
  • The new Xbox Series X variants also include internal hardware revisions such as a smaller 6nm chip, a redesigned motherboard, and a copper heat pipe cooling system.
  • These changes improve energy efficiency over the new Xbox Series X models and run just as quietly.

Microsoft released its three new iterations Xbox Series X/S consoles that offer more storage, a discless option, a new special edition system, and several other major improvements. The platform holder may not have a rival with Sony's upcoming PS5 Pro, but these new Xbox variants fill a lot of gaps in Microsoft's current generation console offerings.

Four years into their lifecycles, the approaches used for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S have diverged quite a bit. Sony has regularly made small revisions to the PS5, be it a more efficient SoC, optimization of the cooling system, a practical vertical stand or the redesigned PS5 Slim that was released last year. The Xbox Series X/S consoles, meanwhile, have remained exactly the same since their launch in 2020. New storage and color options have been introduced, but the Xbox line-up has not changed at a basic level.

Xbox is giving away gold Indiana Jones consoles

Xbox announces that it will be giving away a brand new, customized Series X console inspired by Indiana Jones and The Great Circle ahead of the game's release.

Now Microsoft is adding three new consoles to the Xbox Series X/S family. These were first announced during this summer's Xbox Games Showcase and are now available for purchase. The headliner is Galaxy Black Xbox Series X2TB special edition console with a special black and green color scheme and white spots to mimic outer space. A new one follows white all-digital 1TB Series Xand finally a white 1TB Series S. While these may look like surface-level changes, there's a lot more going on internally, at least for Series X consoles.

The new Xbox Series X consoles bring a lot of internal improvements

New Xbox Series X/S models and prices

  • Xbox Series X, 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition: $599.99
  • Xbox Series X, 1TB Digital Edition (White): $449.99
  • Xbox Series S, 1TB (White): $349.99

New Xbox Series X internal changes

  • A smaller, more power-efficient 6nm chip compared to the launch model's 7nm SoC
  • At idle, the 2TB Series X consumes 10W less power and the 1TB All-Digital consumes 23W less power compared to the entry-level model
  • When gaming, the 2TB model consumes 16W less power and the 1TB All-Digital consumes 11W less power compared to the entry-level model
  • The motherboard has been redesigned and the SSD shield has been removed
  • New copper heat pipe cooling system instead of the vapor chamber on the starter model
  • No measurable changes in fan noise or exhaust temperature

YouTuber Austin Evans recently posted a video of him tearing down the Galaxy Black and the disc-less version of the X series. A close inspection has revealed many changes to the internals of the new Xbox Series X models, the most significant of which is a smaller 6nm chip. The smaller SoC slightly improves power efficiency by at least 10W when idle and up to 16W when gaming. The motherboard was also restructured and the vapor chamber cooling system was ditched for a more conventional copper heat pipe design. Overall, these changes are more in line with earlier PS5 hardware revisions than the Slim model.

As is usually the case with console hardware revisions, Microsoft will be able to produce updated Xbox Series X systems at a lower price. The company hasn't confirmed whether it's broken even in console production, but given how poorly the Xbox Series X/S pair is selling, Microsoft is likely still losing money on each unit.
