Mechanically, it's a pretty simple dating game, and I find that the lack of complexity actually means the whole experience shines a lot brighter, because suddenly all those hackneyed dad jokes and silly moments can land a lot harder without unnecessary clutter getting in the way. While the premise sounds like a joke, the game succeeds because it treats its relationships honestly, balancing humor with genuinely well-written romantic arcs and memorable characters that will keep you coming back again and again.

You're introduced to six potential lovers from all sides of the personality spectrum and your task is to build a meaningful connection while juggling the weight of crippling financial debt.

The game's FMV structure makes every interaction feel like a scene from a reality TV series you're actively participating in, and because I played it with others, all the silliness was magnified tenfold. You're also not limited by the options presented on screen, which means there's always a chance to find little details and extras in the background for those looking for their fairytale ending.

Beneath the absurdity lies a surprisingly elaborate mystery narrative that had me laughing the whole way through, aided by the complete disregard for reality that the game constantly pushes. And with 18 endings to unlock, there are plenty of reasons to replay the data, even aside from the hilarious interactions and moments that happen along the way.

The dating mechanic exists largely as a vehicle for the game's dark humor and social satire, and as silly as some of the scenes can be, I've always found the self-aware tone never strayed too far from view. Many journeys end in complete disaster, and this unpredictability is part of the appeal that turns an otherwise standard experience into a highly chaotic one.

The sheer number of options can seem overwhelming at first, but I never felt like the game was overly overbearing, as you're always interacting with the characters in a meaningful way rather than being bombarded with constant partners. What could have been a one-note joke becomes a huge relationship simulator with an amazing number of branching paths that are equal parts fun and entertaining.

A hateful friend remains one of the most famously offbeat dating sims ever made, and at the same time very silly and emotional. The setting is fairly simple, it's a prestigious school that other dating sims know fairly well, but the students are actually birds that add a lot of subtle humor to an already fun experience.

What keeps the game memorable is how committed it is to its world. Beneath the absurd bird novel lies a surprisingly ambitious narrative of mystery, tragedy, and complex character arcs that left me surprised and eager to see how far things would eventually go.

Sitting in the middle, Olivia acts as the game's central romantic interest as well as a true-to-life friend that you'll undoubtedly bond with long before the credits roll.

The relationship systems are fairly conventional and focus on dialogues and interactions that choose a more emotional than dramatic tone. It's over-the-top, quirky, and I'd definitely call it a must-play for those who prefer a more down-to-earth approach, albeit from millions of years ago.

Sucker for Love: First Date turns forbidden rituals and world-ending horrors into dating opportunities to watch. Like a typical courtship, you find yourself performing gestures and actions, but instead of giving flowers or a romantic date, you end up performing occult ceremonies in hopes of impressing the dark entities that would normally be responsible for the destruction of humanity.

Dating systems reflect traditional visual novels, but each romantic interaction is infused with a healthy dose of cosmic horror. And increasingly ridiculous supernatural situations open the door to a lot of bizarre encounters, and just when I thought it couldn't get any more bizarre, the game pulls the rug and sends you spiraling again.
