Roblox investigation finds that children are still endangered

Summary

  • Another study finds that Roblox lacks protection for children, allowing access to adult content.

  • Scientists have found that children can enter the rooms “roleplay” with the topic of adults.

  • Adults and children can also conversate in a public text chat.

Roblox is again under fire, because another study has concluded that it does not do enough to protect its younger users. In this study, scientists set up accounts with their age listed up to five and were able to access adult content and talk to adult users.

This study comes from an agency revealing a reality that shared research with The Guardian. Here they say that there are not enough restrictions on the protection of children, because access to a text chat means that adults are still able to hunt younger users.

Other Roblox studies find that children have access to adult content

“Our research has confirmed that an account registered as a 42 -year -old could add and publicly communicate with our accounts registered as children aged 5 and privately chat with accounts registered as 13 years and higher,” Research reads.

They add that an account set up for a ten -year -old could freely access the “roleplay” rooms that were sexually thematic, while other players used avatars to simulate sexual acts.

“This Roblox experience was not hidden in some dark corner,” he reads the research. “Children can communicate with adults directly through the Roblox platform. Virtual night and hotel environment – called” Boys and Girls Club Roleplay ” – has strong sexual undertones and is accessible to all children.”

Otherwise, the accounts that were listed as ages under 13 were accessible to the hangout server that should not be able to be able. Their adult account was able to apply for the user name of the Snapchat child without stopping them.

Overall, while Roblox has taken steps to protect its younger users, such as preventing voice chat and direct news for less than 13 years, there are still too many solutions. Specifically, children and adults can still talk to each other in a public text chat, allowing them to make them talk privately on other applications, even if using a coded language. It also seems that there is a problem that adult -oriented games are not advertised as such, some of which represent sexual interactions that are not clear to anyone that they enter the game.

In conclusion, scientists give the following statements:

  • Adults and children can freely interact with without meaningful age verification

  • Sexualized environment accessible accounts registered at the age of under 9 years of age

  • Safety measures that can be circumvented using simple solutions

  • Private (or relatively private) conversations between strangers of all age groups are normalized

  • Content evaluation systems that do not exactly reflect the nature of experiences

  • Opportunities for potentially predatory behavior through private premises and communication outside the platform

British politician and Internet security campaign Beeban Kidron commented on research Guardian. “This kind of user survey should be a routine for a product like Roblox,” he says, adding that this represents “systematic failure to keep children safe”.

In response to the investigation of the main head of roblox security, Matt Kaufman says “trust and security are the core of everything we do”. It continues: “We are constantly developing our politicians, technologies and efforts to moderate our community, especially young people. This involves investing in advanced security instruments, working closely with experts and seizing parents and carers with robust checks and resources.

“In 2024 alone, we added more than 40 new security improvements and remain fully determined to go further to make Roblox a safe and civic place for all.”
