A new rumor suggests that PlayStation Portal could get the ability to stream games without the PS5 turned on in the future. This would certainly be a game changer for the popular handheld accessory, as PlayStation Portal users still need a console to use it.
Released in 2023, PlayStation Portal is quite a popular accessory for the PS5. The device can be used to stream games or other media from the PlayStation 5 using Remote Play technology with an 8-inch LCD HD display and controls with most of the same functionality as the DualSense. Overall, PlayStation Portal has been fairly well received, with around 5% of all PS5 owners purchasing it in the United States.
Rumor has it that the update could allow PS Portal to stream games without turning on the PS5
A new rumor surfaced recently when fans shared images from some PS Store game pages showing a statement that players can “pre-order streaming and play immediately upon release on PS Portal or PS5 (only with PS Plus Premium). This has led to some speculation that Sony might be planning an update where players can directly stream pre-ordered and purchased games from PS Store to PS Portal. If this rumor is confirmed, it could be huge for PS Portal owners news, as they could play their favorite PlayStation 5 games without having to turn on the console, but this is just speculation at this point and should of course be taken with a grain of salt.
While it's too early to tell if this big upgrade is happening, Sony has already released several PS Portal updates this year. Back in April, for example, an update to the PS Portal system introduced new features such as more sorting options for a player's library and capturing games on the fly to a favorite device, improving the handheld experience.
What the future holds for PlayStation handheld accessories remains to be seen, but PlayStation Portal has certainly been a big hit. Considering the accessory's high price of $200, some expected the device not to be as popular as it ended up being, as even Sony admitted that the PS Portal exceeded its internal sales projections. In the event that this rumored update does happen, there's a pretty decent chance that it could boost sales of the device even more, as more gamers might be interested in a cloud-based handheld that would allow them even more freedom to play.

Although not exactly a successor to the PSP, PlayStation Portal solves the age-old problem of sharing a single TV in the home. This remote playback device allows users to stream everything happening on their PlayStation 5 directly to the large 8-inch 1080p LCD screen. What makes the PlayStation Portal unique is that it is packed with all the advanced technologies of the DualSense wireless controller, such as adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. One downside is that it doesn't have Bluetooth support for wireless audio, but it does work with PlayStation Pulse headphones and earphones, and it also has a 3.5mm audio jack for wired audio.
