As we near the end of the current generation, the games are getting more ambitious and impressive with each passing year. A lot of titles that started development before or shortly after the arrival of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are finally getting closer to release. They promise to fully exploit the potential of current-generation hardware, delivering levels of scale, visuals, freedom and immersion never seen before.

It's safe to assume that the next few years will be even more exciting for fans of all genres, including open world. Some games may still be a long way off, but they're already shaping up to be incredibly ambitious, combining cutting-edge visuals with game-changing gameplay. Today we take a look at the upcoming open world games that sound like a dream and are at the top of the list of most anticipated titles for millions of gamers. Note that just because the games listed below may look too good to be true, that doesn't necessarily mean they'll live up to the hype and deliver on everything promised – so let's not set our expectations too high just yet.

Grand Theft Auto 6

Simply in a league of its own

Now there are ambitious open-world games in the works that sound incredible, and then there's this Grand Theft Auto 6. The game is easily in a league of its own, defined by the studio's expertise and reputation, an unprecedented budget for the entire entertainment industry, massive scope, years of development, and simply stunning execution across the board (judging by the early trailers alone). If there are no further delays, this can be safely assumed GTA 6 it will soon raise the bar for the entire industry for many years to come, just like its predecessors GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.

The current level of hype around GTA 6 they are erratic, even unhealthy, with the fan community's hunger for new information constantly producing new theories and speculations about the game based on the slightest clues, such as patents. However, Rockstar is one of the few modern developers known to be able to exceed even the strongest expectations and over-deliver with titles that often look even better at launch than in the first trailers. The Witcher 4

A new dark fantasy saga begins

The Witcher 4 is another upcoming game supported by one of the best open world titles ever created, The Witcher 3: Wild Huntso expectations are quite high. While we have everything Light No Fire so far a trailer has been revealed, this only one, combined with the rumor of Hello Games from No Man's Skyit was enough to instantly put the game on the map as one of the most ambitious and anticipated upcoming open-world games. The idea behind it Light No Fire is simple and brilliant at the same time: combine the depth of a role-playing game with the freedom of a survival quarantine – all set on an Earth-sized fantasy planet. I bet the game concept is basically the definition of a million dollar dream game.

Now, with a strong previous track record, the studio seems to know what it's doing here. Still, there are plenty of concerns about how Light No Fire will end up in practice, especially since there is a very small team currently working on the title. Will the world be as interesting to explore as you'd expect given its size? Will the lore and world building be so rich that it actually takes you on an unforgettable journey rather than just another survival/building sandbox? In any case, Light No Fire it sounds too good to be true, so we're crossing our fingers that the team's attempt to create a truly limitless world doesn't end up being its biggest flaw.

Assassin's Creed Hex

A breath of fresh air for the series

Undoubtedly, Assassin's Creed Codename Hex is the most mysterious upcoming open-world game on the list, given that Ubisoft has yet to officially reveal the game or its final title. All we have are some small glimpses coupled with rumours, speculations and leaks. And yet even this is enough to make the game the most anticipated in the series in a long time. From everything we've learned so far, AC Hex is definitely shaping up to be a major shift for the franchise that could be a long-awaited breath of fresh air for its fans.

Assassin's Creed Hex is described as the darkest entry in the series, set amidst the turbulent times of the witch trials in the Holy Roman Empire (central Europe) in the 16th century. The game was also picked up to feature a much greater emphasis on narrative than previous entries, bringing the signature Assassin-Templar conflict back into focus. All in all, Ubisoft delivered AC Hex is a very different and unique take on Assassin's Creed formula compared to the latest titles such as Alternating shadows. Based on internal information, everyone at the company seems to want to work on the project, based on how promising it appears to be. Of course, with no actual demo yet, it's best not to get your hopes up too high just yet.

Project Bezvetří

Exotic in more ways than one

me, Project Bezvetří looks almost like another Crimson Desertpromising an original fantasy open world unlike any other, coupled with truly massive battles that we still don't get to see very often these days. And that's not even talking about the game's completely unique hero, the mighty bird warrior of the Rekon race, who easily slays countless enemies for a truly powerful one-man fantasy army potential. Based on the game's first trailers, everything from the visuals, music, combat and the world itself is simply top-notch, reflecting Krafton's strong bet on the title and Project Bezvetří one of the most exciting upcoming games in the genre.

To make matters worse, Project Bezvetří isn't just something out of the blue: the game's rich and exotic world is taken directly from the acclaimed Korean fantasy novel The Bird That Drinks Tears, even though the game takes place thousands of years before the book. Its origin story revolves around an old conflict between the Rekon and Nhaga species. Potentially rich in lore, fictional history, fresh fantasy elements you won't find anywhere else, and wild, cinematic combat, Project Bezvetří it definitely looks pretty interesting and hopefully it delivers on everything that has been promised so far.
