The co-founder of Rockstar was worried that the studio might close during the development of GTA 4

Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser once feared that the company would be shut down in the middle of development Grand Theft Auto 4. However, his fears were not borne out GTA 4but a rather controversial mod for GTA: San Andreas.

San Andreas

In June 2005, a scandal erupted after a group of modders led by Dutch coder Patrick Wildenborg – better known by his online moniker PatrickW – unlocked a hidden sex minigame in the newly released PC version of the game. GTA: San Andreas. The collective immediately shared a bypass to access it and released it under the now infamous name Hot Coffee. While the content was not accessible without modifying the game's code, its discovery prompted an ESRB investigation that resulted in GTA: San Andreas its age rating has been increased from mature to adult only. Other regulatory issues stemming from the scandal have emerged at the domestic and international level.

Houser: Hot Coffee Fallout made GTA 4 development feel existential

Speaking on the latest, 484th episode of the Lex Fridman Podcast, Houser recalled how it all played out in the beginning GTA 4 development cycle, leading to an anxious start to production. “As a company, we had the whole hot coffee drama, so we kept thinking we might be shut down in the middle of production [GTA 4]” he recalled. The industry veteran didn't elaborate on how that fear manifested itself, though it suggests he was concerned about Take-Two considering closing Rockstar if the studio deemed it not worth the continued regulatory scrutiny sparked by the hot coffee scandal, which even earned the publisher an official warning from the Federal Trade Commission.

The hot coffee scandal indirectly affected the dark story of GTA 4

Compared to development cycles GTA 3D Space Games, GTA 4 it felt like a much more volatile period for Rockstar, Houser recalled. Combined with the personal issues he was facing at the time, the lead author said he felt “very insecure” during the project. This state of mind influenced the script, p GTA 4 ultimately becoming the thematically darkest entry in the franchise by a significant margin.

While the idea of Rockstar shutting down over a controversial minigame may seem far-fetched in 2025, Houser's story reflects a time when the company hadn't yet become the powerhouse it is today. Despite many successes, that was 13 years ago GTA 5 became the highest-grossing entertainment product of all time and cemented Rockstar's reputation as a developer of games that are not only critically acclaimed but also commercially groundbreaking.

After 22 years at the company, Houser left Rockstar in 2020 to found Santa Monica-based developer Absurd Ventures. It was around that time GTA 6 production grew. Houser recently confirmed that the sixth main entry in the franchise will be the first Grand Theft Auto a game in which he was not meaningfully involved as a writer, producer, or in any other capacity.
