After 17 years, Minecraft is finally adding a long-requested feature

Mojang pulled back the curtain in its latest developer blog Minecraftthe game's upcoming drop, which included the announcement of a feature fans have been waiting for for nearly two decades. A brand new crafting item is introduced Minecraftanother update and will finally allow players to sit down.

Although most played first Minecraft after its full launch in November 2011, the world-renowned sandbox game was technically playable for the first time in May 2009, when an early alpha version of the game was released online. This first version Minecraft — at least compared to the version fans know today — was incredibly basic and lacked countless features that have now become staples Minecraft experience. But even back then, when there was only one biome and no villages, players were asking about a way to get Steve to sit down.

Minecraft adds the ability to sit down

While another Minecraft game drop won't arrive until Q3 2026, Mojang just shared a video detailing some of the update's most exciting features. This is cheekily titled “SIT DOWN! NEW FEATURE IS COMING!” Minecraft dev blog finally confirms a feature fans have been waiting 17 years for: the ability to sit down.

Over the past 17 years, Minecraft players discovered several makeshift ways to force Steve et al to sit down, none of which were perfect solutions. In addition to downloading one of many Minecraft mods intended for players to sit down, common methods involved wedging mine carts or boats into small seat-like structures and placing a mountable animal in a similar structure.

Now players will simply have to forge Minecraftbrand new pillow. Featured in a recent Mojang dev blog, MinecraftThe new Cushion can be made by placing three wool slabs (itself a new block that will be introduced in this upcoming game) in a horizontal line. Once made, players can place this cushion on a flat surface and click to make their character sit down. To make the news even sweeter, Mojang has confirmed that the Cushion will be available in 16 different colors. Cushion will be officially added to Minecraft with the game dropping in Q3 2026, but those playing Java Snapshot, Bedrock Beta or Preview versions Minecraft they will be able to try it out for themselves today.

In the rest of the five-minute dev blog, Mojang gave a general overview of what's coming Minecraft Dappled Forest biome and teased some of the new blocks and items coming with the update. Much of the dev blog was dedicated to showing off the new Straw Bed item. A straw bed, created by placing three bales of hay in a horizontal line, can be placed anywhere and used to skip the night without resetting the player's spawn point. However, this comes at the cost of the straw bed breaking after just one use.

A new set of poplar wood blocks was also shown off during the dev blog, as well as a new sponge shelf and the long-requested Woolen Stairs and Wooden Slabs. A new Abandoned Camp POI is also being added to the Dappled Forest and previous biomes.
