Look, I know you probably read the headline and are only interested in disproving the assumption itself Grand Theft Auto 6 may be anything less than a resounding success. Rockstar Games' open-world crime sequel is easily the most anticipated game of 2026 — after all, it was the most anticipated game of 2025 — and all signs point to the game breaking every record under the sun.
It's a game whose shadow is so monolithic that developers were afraid to announce release dates and were willing to delay at the last minute rather than confront GTA 6. But with all the attention she's getting Grand Theft Auto 6all the billions of dollars in revenue it will generate and tons of hours of game time, what happens when it turns out to be…not so good?
Why Grand Theft Auto 6's release date could be the most important in gaming history
The release window for Grand Theft Auto 6 is approaching, with the implications of its launch likely to have a huge impact on the industry.
It's an idea that in some ways is hard to even consider. Grand Theft Auto 6's success is self-evident, to the point where there hasn't been much discussion about what types of records it will break or how well it will do financially. We can't even imagine how successful Grand Theft Auto 6 it will, because there hasn't been a game like this before. Grand Theft Auto 5 is the closest comparison, but that game will be 13 years old GTA 6 starts
What I'm talking about is whether Grand Theft Auto 6 will be good. Will it be a game that is as inventive, creative, satisfying and fun as befits a game that sets the world on fire?
I think that given the pedigree of Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto 6 will it be incredible I hope so. Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of my favorite games of all time and considering Grand Theft Auto 5 very good game, not on par with Arthur's story. GTA and Red Dead are two very different experiences; both are impressive but in completely different ways. Grand Theft Auto 5 did several things with narrative and open world design that proved why Rockstar Games has no competition, and I expect Grand Theft Auto 6 looks like he's going to blow us away again.
But in the back of my mind there's this little nagging thought (and now it's in yours) that surprises me what happens when the game isn't everything fans hope it is. How will this affect the future of Rockstar Games or even the gaming industry in general? If GTA 6 if they fell short of financial expectations, there would be ripple effects throughout the gaming industry, because when business is booming, it's booming for many studios. However, as we are seeing right now, with spending falling and players having to carefully consider which games to buy, the effects on the industry are disastrous.
Like any media industry, successes help fuel the entire operation. If you like the movie Avengers: Judgment Day it underperforms, then it has a ripple effect that affects both large and small films. Similarly, if Grand Theft Auto 6 it's useless, then it hurts the development of the game as a whole.
I'm not saying that the entire video game industry is counting on it Grand Theft Auto 6 succeed but saying “A rising tide lifts all boats” is apt here. There may be a lot of people coming out of their self-imposed hiatus from video games because Grand Theft Auto is an event, as is seeing the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is an event. Then, once you get back into the habit, maybe see what other games are out there.
There is a “what if” scenario. Grand Theft Auto 6 it doesn't do all the things it's supposed to do. It doesn't become the best-selling medium ever created, stay in the top 10 for years, and occupy our free time during the holidays in 2026. If it did, I shudder to think what would happen to the industry. Rockstar Games will probably be fine, but it would be a damaging outcome for other aspects of video games.
In fact, everything is predetermined. Sheer momentum GTA 6 he doesn't allow the game to do anything but dominate. But what if not?
