Once you've completed the Volt Forge – or at least as much of the Volt Forge as you can complete on your first visit – you'll be released into sol valley, the semi-open world desert area that was the focus of much of the game's marketing. Like most Metroid games, you will have the appearance of freedom. As for what you can actually do next after Volt Forge, you'll really only have one real option.

Although you can technically go back to Fury Green and pick up the few items that will make the new ones available Psychic Boots and Psychic Bomb. However, after visiting the Flare Pool, you'll need to return to Fury Green to collect the Fire Chip, so it's worth waiting until you have Fire Shot bring back the first main dungeon of the game.

Unlike the previous ones Metroid game, you don't simply unlock a new weapon when you explore a new dungeon. Instead, you'll first need to find the data chip that contains the schematics for the new weapon. In this case, the Fire Chip data can be found in the Flare Pool dungeon, located in the southeast corner of the world map.

Once you reach the Flare Pool, use the Vi-O-La cycle on the spinner platform to access the main entrance. After you enter, there will really only be one path to follow, which leads to a cutscene where Samus is trying to cross the bridge. A mysterious figure—probably Sylax—causes the bridge to collapse, forcing Samus to retreat.

You won't be able to cross the lava under the bridge yet, so you'll be forced to leave the Flare Pool until you upgrade Samus' suit. However, when you exit the main chamber, you'll see that the previously locked door is now open and robot enemies are coming out. Defeat the enemies, go through the door and follow the path to its end.

At the end of the path, you'll come to a large chamber with a crane with its arm hanging over the center area. You should see a red glowing light at the tip of the crane. As you look around the room, you'll see platforms that allow you to jump onto the back of the crane's body.

Once on top of the crane, use the Morph Ball and Psychic Bombs to enter the small path that leads to the top of the crane. At the tip, use Pyschic Bomb once more to cause the machine to fall at the end. When this happens, you'll see a short cutscene showing that the glowing object has been released.

Approach the glowing object and interact with it. Doing so will reward Samus with a Fire Chip, a key component needed to unlock Fire Shot. Now leave the Flare Pool and you will get a message from Myles to return to base camp on Fury Green.
