A petition has been started to free the Nemesis system from the pending sale of Warner Bros

The Nemesis System patent is one of the biggest travesties in modern gaming. Created, implemented and patented by the now-defunct Monolith Productions (which was owned by Warner Bros), the system saw Shadow of War and Shadow of Mordor's Orcs rise through the ranks each time they defeated your character.

With each promotion, these goblins became stronger, more twisted, and more determined to take you down. It added a layer of depth and complexity to what would otherwise have been a pair of completely serviceable Lord of the Rings action RPGs.

Unfortunately, however, the system was last seen in 2017's Middle-earth: Shadow of War, when Warner Bros. they clearly overlooked the patent and its potential impact on future video games. He seemed to have died next to the Monolith, but now there is a glimmer of hope.

With the sale of Warner Bros to Netflix (or now potentially Paramount Skydance) on the horizon, gamers and developers are hoping the patent will be removed, so much so that a new petition has been created asking the potential buyer to release the Nemesis system to everyone.

In recent days, there have been reports that Netflix is in action to acquire Warner Bros., incl all his game IPs. If the sale goes through, with a rival hostile bid from Paramount Skydance now under consideration, Netflix would own DC, Harry Potter, The Matrix and, in this case, most notably, the Nemesis System.

Hopefully Netflix will play the “good guys,” a new Change.org petition has been created asking the company to “unlock the Nemesis system.”

The petition calls the Nemesis system “one of the most groundbreaking innovations in modern gaming” and asks potential signatories to “Imagine a world where RPGs, action games, strategy games, roguelikes, and survival games are filled with emergent stories and dynamic characters enabled by the widespread availability of the Nemesis system.” The implementations are truly endless, and if done right, could change the face of video games forever.

Warner Bros. will continue to own the Nemesis system until 2036, despite the closure of Monolith

The Monolith may be gone, but the Nemesis System still belongs to Warner Bros.

While the petition only has 484 signatures at the time of writing, it is hoped that it will take off, strengthening “Netflix's reputation as an industry leader, but also setting new standards for fostering innovation and creativity in gaming.”
