Some ARC Raiders players use the game's configuration files to cheat

Some ARC Raiders on PC reportedly managed to work around the limits of the game's camera by tweaking one hidden configuration setting, giving them a much wider field of view and the huge advantage that comes with it. The exploit appears to have been inadvertently enabled by recent ARC Raiders patch, although it seems developers Embark Studios have already fixed it.

Like any other remotely popular multiplayer game, ARC Raiders has had problems with cheaters since its release. As time goes on, many of these problems can be traced back to paid trainers that bad actors sell on third-party sites, allowing other bad actors to gain various unfair advantages. Occasionally, something much less premeditated will materialize, allowing opportunists to take advantage. In a final example of the latter, some FOV settings were recently modified by players in unintended ways.

The recently discovered ARC Raiders use the ridiculous FOV allowed

During the last few days before January 10th, there were reports of ARC Raiders players looking for a way to change the game's field of view came online. The story became so widespread that several clearly cheating individuals with an incredibly wide FOV occasionally streamed their exploits on Twitch. Based on VODs reviewed by Game Rant, ARC RaidersThe recently introduced Stella Montis was among the maps most affected by cheaters earlier this month. This is not because the exploit is more difficult to replicate at another level; in all likelihood, the overrepresentation of Stella Montis among cheaters' preferred FOV maps has something to do with them being specifically designed with frequent PvP in mind, making any advantage – fair or not – potentially that much more lucrative.

Embark has already found a way to fight back, according to an official announcement posted on Saturday on the game's Discord server ARC Raiders scammers relying on this particular technique since January 10, just over a day after knowledge of it spread. A representative from the studio suggested that the issue was related to the inadvertent ability to activate the so-called “NewConsole” command in the PC version of the game, thereby being able to change the field of view. “This feature was never meant to be aimed at players,” the official wrote. While Embark has patched one particular FOV adjustment method, the developer is currently monitoring telemetry data and other information sources for any related exploits that might also slip through the cracks.

FOV tuning was just one of several ways console commands allowed players to gain an unfair advantage, assuming they knew what they were doing. Using a very basic Unreal Engine 5 toolset, its console can be used to disable individual visual effects such as shadows, dust and fog, all of which improve visibility and offer a notable advantage in competitive shooters, mining or otherwise. In this case, enabling the console was reportedly as simple as editing a configuration file on the PC. This isn't unusual, but it's also usually easily preventable as Unreal Engine 5 gives developers the ability to easily disable console access in game builds. While this is usually enforced in ARC Raiders update, it seems that a step was missed in the latest patch.

This feature was never intended for gamers.

It remains unclear how many players were directly affected ARC Raiders fraudsters using this specific surveillance. On the one hand, the fact that the exploit became widespread enough to appear on Twitch suggests that it has been active for some time. On the other hand, given the game's broader issues with cheating, distinguishing this particular exploit from others using publicly available data is difficult, if not impossible. As for Embark Studios, the developer is reportedly still reimbursing players for items lost in matches with confirmed cheaters. However, this compensation appears to be inconsistent and depends on the study's ability to identify the perpetrator afterwards.
