Attack on Titans the versatile cast of characters is a big part of why the series became a worldwide hit during its run. It's not just Eren, Mikasa, and Armin who have managed to attract fans throughout the series. Attack on Titan has an incredibly strong supporting cast, with the series giving fans different points of view to consider, allowing you to understand the motivations and struggles of various characters.
But like any other series, you also have characters that people just hate. For some, it's well-deserved, but for others, things are a little more complicated. This cannot be denied among all Attack on Titans The characters are some of the most popular among fans.
7 things Attack on Titan does better than all other Shonen anime
When it comes to these things, Attack on Titan is just a cut above the competition.
Yelena
Yelena played a big role Attack on Titans final season, serving as a secondary villain for the final stretch of the story. As a member of the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers, fans have plenty of reasons to dislike Yelena. Her actions and attitude throughout her tenure on the show definitely made it hard for anyone to see anything good in her.
Yelena is a dangerous fanatic whose near-godlike reverence for Zeke has led her to manipulate and murder people, all for Zeke's ideals. At the end of the series, fans could see different characters with different extremist views come into play, but Yelena stands out in the worst way.
Grandmaster Gross
So much conflict in Attack on Tiana focuses on how past transgressions can allow people to tear each other down in a perpetual cycle of revenge and retribution. Sergeant Major Gross represents the absolute worst part of humanity to come out of this cycle.
Gross used his position in the public security authorities to abuse and oppress the Eldians living in Marley. He was an incredibly sadistic and racist man who wanted to kill all Eldians and was responsible for countless Eldian deaths, including Grishia's younger sister Faye, who was torn apart by dogs with incredible cruelty. He got his payback in the end, but fans still absolutely hate his guts.
Rod Reiss
Rod Reiss is hated by fans mainly because of how he treated his daughter and fan favorite character Historia. Reiss allowed Historia's mother to be killed, leaving her and trying to bring her back into his life only when he needed her to kill Eren and take over his power.
But being a bad father isn't the only thing fans have against him. Rod is a coward, pushing the burden of his ideals on his children. He cared more about the power of his family than the family itself. He's not necessarily the worst person on the show, but he's also not someone you root for.
Fritz
In a series full of terrible people, Fritz is the absolute worst. There is no nuance to him, no good explanation to justify his actions, just an evil man who stands as the root cause of all the suffering and death we see throughout the series.
Old King Eldia was power hungry, conquering, enslaving and oppressing people in the name of expanding his empire. We don't see much of Fritz, but what we do see tells us everything we need to know. He produced the worst person in the franchise and will forever be remembered as the cause of so much suffering in the Attack on Titan universe.
Floch Forster
Floch, like Yelena, is a great example of how someone whose idealism and blind faith in the wrong person can lead them down a terrible path. As a member of the Yeagerists, Floch was one of Eren's most useful pawns by the end of the series. He was so consumed with the idea that Eren's plan was the only way for the Eldians to find peace moving forward that he lashed out at his former allies without a second thought.
Fans can see Floch's downfall unlike some other characters who are just presented as evil or on the wrong side of things, but that didn't help his standing with the fanbase much. For many, Floch's actions and willingness to sacrifice humanity are too horrible to overlook.
Zeke Yeager
Like his brother, Zeke is a well-written character that gives fans a good look at how generational trauma and the continuing cycle of hatred in Attack on Titan affect those caught up in it. But Zeke is a much more hated character than his brother, even though the latter is responsible for even worse atrocities.
We see how Zeke's upbringing and environment made him the self-loathing psychopath that he is. But as much as we understand why Zeke ended up the way he did, it doesn't really excuse him for taking so many lives trying to wipe out the Eldian people. At one point, Zeke became an annoying obstacle that most were happy to finally see go.
Gabi Braun
Gabi gets a lot of hate from the fans and it feels unfair at times. She was created to offer a different perspective while being similar to Eren in many ways. But the odds were stacked against her from the start.
Gabi is incredibly stubborn and arrogant, having been completely indoctrinated to believe that the people of Paradiso are evil and deserve death and destruction. She has a great development later in the series, but some fans just can't get over her initial behavior. The fact that she killed off one of the series' most popular characters doesn't help her much either.
