Despite a strong year for games in 2025, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is collecting Game of the Year awards left and right. So much so that with just three weeks until 2026, when the 2025 GOTY awards are still being handed out, Expedition 33 has now won more than any other game in history.
ResetEra's thorough GOTY award tracker has been following the progress of Expedition 33 for weeks. It became the game with the second most awards at the turn of the year, and its campaign for best ever continued as it sailed past 400 awards last week.
Elden Ring's record was broken
However, in order to become the best and top of the pile, he needed to accumulate a total more than Elden Ring achieved in 2022. Winning 435 awards and surpassing the previous record of The Last of Us Part 2, 326, he felt that Elden Ring's record may never be broken. Here we are, just three years later, and Expedition 33 is now leading the pack.
It's not over yet, of course. Even with 2025 in the rearview mirror, there are still more awards to be handed out. Of course, the rate at which they are released has slowed down, but it is highly unlikely that GOTY Expedition 33's journey ends here. Although Elden Ring's record has been broken, a new final tally has not yet been set.

While there have been some fantastic games released in 2025, none have come close to garnering as many accolades as Expedition 33.
Who were Expedition 33's closest competitors in 2025?
In second place is currently Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, which has been crowned GOTY 38 times so far. Hollow Knight: Silksong is third with 22 awards, Donkey Kong Bananza has 15, and then Hades 2 and Blue Prince are tied for fifth with 14 awards. All the games that were released in different years would comfortably win many more awards without Expedition 33 to compete.
Expedition 33 managed to become the most awarded game of the year despite being stripped of one of its awards. The first Sandfall game was mired in controversy over Larian's admission that she used generative AI to help bring ideas to life for her new Divinity game. Sandfall admitted to using AI during development, leading to its Indie Game Awards GOTY being canceled and awarded to Blue Prince instead.
