The January 2026 PS5 system update is now available

Sony has started rolling out a brand new system software update for its flagship console PlayStation 5. The latest firmware update is the first to be released in 2026, and includes not only the usual stability and performance improvements for the PlayStation 5, but also a new feature that allows players to turn on read receipts to let their friends know when they're being ignored. Firmware version 26.01-12.60.00 is now available worldwide, but Sony says that not all users will have access to the new read receipt feature immediately.

PlayStation 5 owners can probably expect plenty more firmware updates on the horizon, as it's believed that Sony may have pushed the PS6 release date up to 2029. If that's the case, that means the PS5 will have a longer life cycle than the usual eight years that consoles often take. According to MST Financial's chief analyst, the next-gen console's release date is likely to be much later than expected. Since Sony's chief console architect, Mark Cerny, said the PS6 would be released in a few years, many expected a 2027 or 2028 launch, which would be in line with the usual 8-year life cycle. However, the ongoing RAM crisis could have a significant impact, which could mean the console won't see the light of day until 2029 or later.

The latest PS5 update adds a new feature

So while it doesn't look like the PS5 is going anywhere anytime soon, users will be pleased to see support continue with another new feature for the console. As part of the latest firmware update, which began rolling out globally on January 28, Sony added the ability for PS5 owners to turn on read receipts for their messages, which will show friends whether their message has been read or completely ignored. Firmware update 26.01-12.60.00 also allows players to jump directly from the Friends Activity widget in their Welcome Center to the games their friends are playing. And of course, it wouldn't be a PS5 update without some good old stability tweaks and system software performance improvements.

For those eager to let their friends know they've ignored their messages, read receipts can be turned on or off in Settings > Users & Accounts > Privacy > View and edit privacy settings. Under Communication and Multiplayer, set Show read receipts to other players on PS5 and the PlayStation App to Enable. However, Sony noted that the feature won't be available to everyone immediately as it's being rolled out gradually. So if you update your console to the latest firmware but don't see this new setting, don't panic, you'll get it eventually.

It's been a while since Sony released a major update for the PS5, with the last big change coming in November when the PlayStation 5 Welcome Center received some new widgets and themes. Another software patch then rolled out in December, only bringing more stability improvements and minor performance tweaks. With the PS6 rumored to be delayed, it's unknown if Sony plans to release any major updates to the current-gen console in the next few years, or if they'll continue to be the same.

Fortunately, it's already shaping up to be a big year for PlayStation Plus subscribers. Nine new games were added to the PS Plus Extra and Premium catalog earlier this month, kicking off 2026 in style. FROM Resident Evil Villagewhich arrives just in time for release Resident Evil Requiem next month, until Like a Dragon: Infinite WealthPS4 and PS5 users have a whole host of new games to enjoy.
