8 Best Written Jujutsu Kaisen Characters Gege Completely Forgot About

Gege Akutami is a master at subverting shonen tropes and creating a world where the stakes don't go down and no one is safe. Jujutsu Kaisen has some of the most complex power structures and character interactions in modern manga, and its pacing and lack of filler have earned it much acclaim. However, the same lightning pace can sideline already fully developed characters. During the contest in the final arc, some wizards who were established as key players are left behind, forced to draw ambiguous conclusions, or simply disappear in the course of the narrative.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Toji vs Maki – Who's Stronger?

Maki Zenin and Toji Fushiguro, the black sheep of the Zenin clan, sure know how to make a mess, but who is stronger?

Although Gege's attention to the main plot makes the series addictive, viewers can consider alternative possibilities of what could have happened to the characters who should have lived longer. These seven characters are the most prominent of the supporting roles Jujutsu Kaisen — those who, despite the occasional lack of closure of the story, captivated the audience with their methods, background and personality.

Toge Inumaki

toge inumaki mouth to reveal jjk

Toge Inumaki was a unique member of Tokyo's second year class and a warrior with the dangerous Cursed Speech. IN Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and in the early sections of the main story, he is shown to be a force that can instantly end battles by saying a single word, but at great physical cost.

Inumaki mostly dropped out of the front line after losing his arm in the Sukuna Domain expansion in Shibuya. He only appeared in a few cameos and a minor supporting role in the final fight, so his arc and reactions to the loss of his friends happened mostly off-screen. Before the series ended, many fans noted that his relationship with Yuta and Panda might have deserved a more thorough treatment.

Miwa Kasumi

Jujutsu Kaisen Kasumi Miwa

Miwa initially comes off as an ordinary girl in a curse-infested world, but her shades of emotions prove to be very relatable. After the death of Mechamaru (Kokichi Muta), Miwa is ready for a sad story of separation and hopes to become stronger. She even threatens to continue negotiating with Kenjaku in Shibuya, promising to never pick up a sword again if she only draws her sword, an effort that Kenjaku easily escapes. After this event, Miwa's role is merely decorative. Fans lamented that her talent as a Simple Domain expert was not really showcased in Culling Games and that she was used as a mere tragic figure when she could have been a hero.

Hajime Kashimo

Hajime Kashimo and Sukuna JJK

Kashimo is a 400-year-old lightning god who was a sorcerer who took an interest in Sukuna only to challenge him. His entrance to the Culling Games is legendary and his fight with Hakari is one of the best in the series. However, when he actually proceeds to use his once cursed technique, Mythical Beast Amber, on Sukun, the fight ends almost immediately.

As a character whose history was rooted in centuries of anticipation, his departure was too quick to suit the fan base. Kashimo was an otherwise well-written battle junkie, but ultimately existed to measure Sukuna's power rather than as a fully fleshed out character with a complete path.

Hana Kurusu / Angel

strongest wizards in hana kurusu game

Hana Kurusu and the old wizard living inside her, Angel, played a major role in the story long before and had the ability to unseal Satoru Gojo. Despite the fact that the dynamic of the vessel is similar to that of Yuji and Sukun, the interaction between Hana and Angel is barely explored.

Most of Hana's screen time is given to her childhood crush on Megumi Fushiguro, which makes her easily disposed of by Sukuna's trickery. According to the arguments of Reddit users, the Angel lore, specifically their revenge on The Fallen, was the key plot that Gege left out to get to the final confrontation.

Aoi Todo

Aoi Todo from JJK

Aoi Todo is probably the most popular character Jujutsu Kaisen. His Boogie Woogie technique is some of the most creative fight choreography in the series. Todo loses his arm in Shibuya and does not appear in the manga, except at the very end when he helps in the final battle.

What makes this feel like forgotten potential is that Todo was tutored by Yuki Tsukumo, but the two don't have a single scene in the current timeline. His absence leaves a huge void in the personality of the series, and although his appearance has been marketed, the dozen chapters where the character known as the Best Friend was absent do not count.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Nobara's End, Explained

Nobara's end was very devastating. Her character had much more potential in JJK.

Nobara Kugisaki

Nobara Kugisaki

The story is highly controversial as to why Nobara is supposed to die in Shibuya. Her condition was deliberately ambiguous for many years, and Arata Nitta recommended a non-zero chance of survival. This ambiguity left fans in limbo, waiting for a comeback, which didn't happen until the final chapters.

Since she was not present during most of the main arcs of the series (The Culling Games), her character growth was essentially put on hold. Nobara, a strong, well-written female protagonist who didn't fit into girl stereotypes, was feisty and many believe Gege overlooked her until the story was almost complete.

Yuki Tsukumo

Yuki Tsukumo from JJK

Yuki Tsukumo is an example of a character with divine potential removed prematurely. As the only one of the four special class wizards, she was the only one who intended to transform the world by eradicating cursed energy, not just ghosts. It was her soul study that saved Megumi and defeated Sukuna, although we only saw her in action once.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Kenjaku vs Yuki Tsukumo, explained

When Choso was spent, she intervened to defeat Kenjaka. This is the brutal story of one of the most important Jujutsu Kaisen matches.

Her death at the hands of Kenjaku was heroic, but fans definitely think it was Kenjaku's armor. How often do you just recently master a cursed technique that could face a literal black hole? Fans also wish to see more interaction between her and her student Todo or more of the story. Yuki had the most interesting philosophy in the series, she was a revolutionary character but was sacrificed to advance the plot before she could lead it.

Fumihiko Takaba

Fumihiko Takaba has what many consider to be the most broken of all cursed techniques in the series: the Comic. According to the narrator, his power is able to turn anything he finds funny into something tangible; she becomes as powerful as the powers of Satoru Gojo himself. However, Takaba is a “purist” comedian who refuses to kill because he doesn't find death funny. This self-serving failure is the only factor that prevented the series from ending completely differently. If Takaba had even an ounce of dark humor, he could simply imagine that it would be “hilarious” if Sukuna accidentally hit World Slash or if Gojo's Infinity suddenly stopped working all together, he could easily win a 1v2 against two of the strongest wizards in history.

However, Takaba was practically pushed out of the story after his legendary comedy battle with Kenjaku. As a brilliant example of experimental writing, the very fact that an experimenter of this sort was never fully utilized or even mentioned in the final battle against Sukuna felt like a great missed opportunity. He's a well-written, quirky anomaly that could have changed the course of the war, but was discarded after his specific narrative mission was accomplished, and the story served to make Yuji and Yuta the heroes.
