Horizon fans are upset about the Heroes Gathering announcement

Earlier this week, PlayStation decided to drop the Horizon casual game announcement on Thursday afternoon right after the Nintendo Direct with absolutely zero fanfare – not exactly the smartest move. Despite this, Horizon Heroes Gathering has managed to garner some attention, although unfortunately it's not very popular for Guerrilla developers.

Now, it's worth noting that online reactions to the Horizon series have always been rather negative, from a general dismissive attitude towards the games themselves, to people being weird about Aloy literally because she's a woman. Reactions to Heroes Gathering's relatively inclusive cast have been similarly toxic on sites like Twitter, but Horizon fans don't seem to be feeling the same.

Horizon fans are upset about the Heroes Gathering announcement

On the Horizon subreddit, you'll find a number of complaints from fans of the series saying things like Heroes Gathering being forced on Guerrilla as part of its big live services effort, expressing disappointment that this likely means the next proper Horizon game is further away, or just a general rejection of the game's Fortnite-esque art style.

“This is probably a Sony push tbh,” says a user named SnooSketches3386. “They have an obsession with trying to break into live service and keep failing. Guerrilla stated that Heroes Gathering was an idea the studio had had for some time, although it is not actually confirmed if the idea was a result of the PlayStation Live Service support.

Horizon's film adaptation is already set for success

But will Sony pull it off, or will we be in for another setback?

“Honestly, my biggest disappointment with this is that Horizon 3 will probably take another 3+ years and by then I feel like gaming world fatigue will be on the horizon,” says a user named Worldly-Doctor-1072. “Such a huge mistake to expand before completing the trilogy.”

“Yeah, as fun as the art style is, it just doesn't fit the universe for me,” says GoldenEclipse14. “What tribes are half the characters even supposed to be? Have we ever seen a character with hair that dyed? It feels more like characters thrust into the world than actually born into it.”

Of course, there are some believers out there who take a more sensible approach to the whole “wait and see” thing, which is definitely what you should do when it comes to new experiences. It's safe to say, though, that a lot of the reaction to Horizon Heroes Gathering was either pretty lukewarm or downright negative, so we'll see how Guerrilla shakes out in the long run.
