Current excitement around Cyberpunk 2077 coming to Game Pass comes from a comedic “leaked” internal email shared by the official Xbox Game Pass account. The report comes from a fictitious executive named Melissa McGamepass, whose absurdly long title — Chief Executive Director Chair of Senior Operations & Grand Liaison of Video Game Communications — has become a running joke for the brand. In a note, he mentions that “there is no such thing as too many games” and points out that there are “so many breathtaking worlds to explore”.
The most egregious hint in the email is a sentence that states the next upcoming addition will be “v good,” with the “v” in bold. Fans of the genre were quick to point out that “V” is the name of the main character in CD Projekt Red's gritty sci-fi hit. The post's caption also promises that something “cool” is coming soon, which strongly suggests that the marketing team is deliberately highlighting that particular letter as a clue.
In addition to the bold letters, the email contains a second main link that points to Cyberpunk 2077. The message begins with the sentence: “Wake up social team.” This sounds almost identical to the memorable line delivered by Keanu Reeves' character, Johnny Silverhand, in the first trailers for the game, where he famously tells the player, “Wake up, samurai.” This combination of “v” and “wake up” left the community convinced that a trip to Night City was in their immediate future.
This trailer comes at a time of significant leadership changes within the Xbox organization. Longtime Xbox leader Phil Spencer has officially retired, and former Xbox president Sarah Bond has also left the company. The brand is now managed by Matt Booty and Asha Sharma, with Sharma serving as CEO of Microsoft Gaming. Sharma has been vocal about the new commitment to Xbox's core players, expressing a desire to focus on games that evoke deep emotional responses from audiences.
The “leak” format has proven accurate results. Just last month, a similar email prank was used to hint at the arrival Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 on Xbox Game Pass. In this case, the official announcement followed only one day after the track was posted on social media. If this formula applies, official confirmation Cyberpunk 2077 can happen as early as Tuesday.
The email also included some witty nods to other game icons to keep fans guessing. The inbox contained a message from Mortal KombatJohnny Cage asks to be the new mascot, along with a silent, one-word message from the Doomslayer. While these other items are clearly meant to be fun easter eggs, the specific bold “v” echoes past jokes for Xbox Game Pass games like Avatar: Frontiers of Pandorawho also used clues from social media right before the official unveiling.
If the rumors are true, this would be a massive acquisition for the March 2026 Game Pass roster. Cyberpunk 2077 reaching the milestone of 35 million copies sold by the end of 2025, it recovered from a difficult launch to become a favorite among action RPG fans. For those who were curious as to why the game was getting so much hype but didn't buy it in full, the arrival of Game Pass would offer the perfect chance to jump on board.
