Although this may no doubt have been largely due to constant comparisons with Pokemon at the time – with it being most commonly referred to as “Pokémon with Weapons” –Palworld however, it achieved success because of how it combined creature-collecting mechanics with survival crafting, base-building, and open-world exploration. That was something Pokemona gaming franchise known all too well for playing it safe has never delivered before Palworld ahead of his comparisons. Now, after its massively popular Steam Launching Early Access in 2024, Palworld it naturally left a void that fans who have since stopped playing would be happy to fill with something else. Luckily for them, indie developer Blue Isle Studios might have them covered.
Guardians of the Wild Sky is an upcoming open world survival game that has a creature collecting aspect Palworld and places it in the same space with games as Veiled. Although it currently has no release date on Steam, Guardians of the Wild Sky it already has a playable demo available as part of the Steam Next Fest, giving players a chance to try out the game for now and provide the developers with any feedback they may have.
Guardians of the Wild Sky combines collecting creatures from the open world of Palworld with stealth-like survival
Assumption Guardians of the Wild Sky it's fairly straightforward because it doesn't appear to be driven by a deep narrative at first glance. The game has potential for extensive lore, but more than anything else, it feels like a fantasy world that was simply created to include unique survival, exploration, base-building, and creature-collecting elements. Guardians of the Wild Sky however, it is not your ordinary survival game, nor is it just a game Palworld clone. Rather, it's more of a melting pot of ideas from different genres and settings, so we'll just call it a blend Palworld and Veiled almost insufficient.

In the heart Guardians of the Wild SkyThe gameplay is its namesake: Guardians. Players capture and bond with these magical creatures, who can then assist them in combat, exploration, production, and survival. Guardians can be fed, groomed and cared for, presumably increasing the player's bond with them, and even a breeding system can eventually be unlocked, where the traits and genetics of Guardians can be combined to create new Guardians. It is currently unclear how many unique guardians are inside Guardians of the Wild Skybut early footage makes the number seem endless.
The open world of Guardians of the Wild Sky is full of possibilities
One thing is certain Guardians of the Wild Skybut is that its open world looks and sounds massive. In fact, one of the first complaints players had about the game's demo is that it only allows them 8 hours per biome, which is obviously not enough. But for a game that has dragons and airships, it would have to be vast and Guardians of the Wild Sky is. “Explore a vast sea of clouds stretching hundreds of kilometers and discover biomes made up of thousands of floating islands,” says its Steam description, with dynamic day-night cycles, a world teeming with wildlife, and plenty of secrets for players to discover as they explore.
Of course, players will need to set up camp in his world if they hope to establish any foothold in it, and this is the place. Guardians of the Wild SkyHere comes crafting and base building. The game invites players to build their “dream home in the sky”, be it a cozy cabin or a flying castle, using materials they find while exploring the wilderness. They can also craft “hundreds of tools, weapons, and magical items” in what sounds like a very deep crafting system, and classic crafting activities like cooking, farming, and fishing are available to players (“even in the clouds,” the game claims).
Bring your imagination to life as you shape your place in the sky. Whether you're building for survival or style, the possibilities are endless.
Where Guardians of the Wild Sky where it really starts to differentiate itself from every other game and genre it seems to emulate is in the opportunity it gives players to make their own airship. Just as they can build a base on the ground brick by brick, they can also build an airship. What can (and probably will) be interesting here is how Guardians of the Wild Sky incorporates physics and engineering into building an airship. It will probably need to be built to be truly functional, and while that does present some limitations, it also gives players a chance to build some truly awesome creations.
Finally, Guardians of the Wild Sky is not without its conflicts, as players are expected to overcome opposition such as “Titan or eternal beasts in ancient dungeons and crumbling battleways” while exploring the open world, which the game mentions on its Steam page. After defeating these enemies, players can obtain valuable loot and equipment to improve their chances of winning the next battle, and can even acquire and build trophies to show off their victories back at base. There are also cultist factions in the world Guardians of the Wild Sky that players will be confronted whose “sinister plans” appear to be tied to the game's overarching story and lore.
Venture into the wilderness on an epic adventure to uncover shadowy caves, ancient dungeons, and treacherous enemies called cultists.
More than anything else, Guardians of the Wild Sky sounds like a hodgepodge of many open world survival games Palworld and Veiled are the two most remarkable comparisons. Whether it ends up working in his favor will depend on how it all plays out. Palworld proved that there is an appetite for collecting creatures for survival, but lightning does not always strike twice in the same place. If Blue Isle Studios can make their floating island world, airship crafting system, and Guardian mechanics more cohesive than cobbled together, Guardians of the Wild Sky could fill that post-Palworld gap.
Guardians of the Wild Sky is currently available on wishlist at Steamalong with a free-to-play demo.
