The Unreal Engine 5 reimagining of the cult classic RPG has been in development since 2020 at Alkimia Interactive, THQ Nordic's Spanish subsidiary founded in the same year. The Gothic the remake was originally targeted for a late 2024 launch, but was delayed several times. Its development history has also been shaped by fan feedback: while the original 2019 demo drew criticism for being too mechanically different from the Piranha Bytes RPG, Alkimia seemed to embrace that backlash, with the second demo – released in February 2025 and still available on Steam as of this writing – met with a much warmer reception.

Gothic it owes its cult status to a blend of dark fantasy atmosphere, realistic NPC routines, and writing that makes its world feel less like a player's sandbox and more like a place in its own right. Also different from most open-world RPGs is the combat system, which allows the protagonist to improve not only damage and defense stats, but also animations and unlock new combos by training with experienced instructors. Its sequel, Gothic 2it has retained many of the same qualities while offering a larger open world. Some vocal fans on the r/WorldOfGothic subreddit and other forums have been hoping for years that if the upcoming remake is a commercial success, Alkimia will get the resources needed to upgrade the second and third Gothic games too.
