“Any update is a bonus, not a right” Peak Developer responds to “lazy” criticism

Top the developers responded to criticism that the game did not receive enough meaningful updates adding new content, with the player calling the developers “lazy”. The claim comes after reports that Top will receive at least one more update in 2026.

Top it was an almost immediate success upon its release in June 2025, moving five million copies in less than a month. With over ten million copies Top Sold to date, the lack of promise of long-term updates and content additions did not sit well with all those players. However, if we look at it from the developer's point of view, the reasoning behind the end of updates makes a lot of sense.

Peak Developers Defend Against “Lazy” Claims

On Twitter, a user had a problem with Topsaying they're upset the game has a “lazy development cycle” when the team “could have done a lot more with it.” The team at Landfall didn't dwell on this claim, pointing out that Landfall and Aggro Crab, the game's dual developers, are not live services studios, and pointed to the numerous updates the game has received since its release. The developer noted that the updates are more of a bonus than a right, given the nature of the two development studios.

The same person then said that the game needs an update “that actually makes sense,” suggesting that game customization and easier modding would be a big plus. Landfall explained that “full customization is a big ask,” though the developer is open to suggestions from the community. However with regard to modding Topthey noted that they were fully engaged with the modding community, and that when asked if the community wanted a modding workshop, they were not interested. The team also highlighted the fact that the game will receive “at least one more” update.

to be fair Top since its launch, it has received a number of updates that have added new biomes, items, enemies and more. Developer Aggro Crab has already started working on a new project called Crashout Crewwhich is expected to be released later in 2026 and has likely diverted most of the team's attention from Top. While the teams are probably happy with it Top it was so well received and sold so well that it was originally part of a game jam that was developed in just four months. It's likely that neither team expected the game to perform this well and planned to provide significant long-term updates accordingly.

This has also been an ongoing problem with the indie game scene, especially those that have become viral in popularity out of nowhere. Deadly companyfor example, has been hugely popular since its release, and while it has seen many updates, most of them have been minor, with a single developer leaving for a while to work on a new game called Welcome to the Dark Place. Another big indie hit that had a similar problem is the ghost hunting game Phasmophobia. While it has gone through several updates at this point, including some major map redesigns, the inclusion of new elements, and new ghosts, fans have criticized the game for pushing back promised updates, including Phasmophobia The horror 2.0 rework and the end of the game's early access, which was originally supposed to happen in 2024, but still didn't come out.

This is also worth noting Top was developed as follows Another crab treasurewhich left the team at Aggro Crab in a state of burnout after years of work. Bringing a similar level of grind to development Top could very well have made things worse for the developers. Although some players may be disappointed Top isn't going to become a live service title with rolling updates anytime soon, the game's last major update, its inherent gameplay loop, and fan mods can help keep it interesting for a long time to come.
