Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a free PS5 Pro upgrade tomorrow

Cyberpunk 2077 is getting the long-awaited PlayStation 5 Pro upgrade on April 8. The free update is a visual and performance improvement for players who already own a copy Cyberpunk 2077. The update uses the PlayStation 5 Pro's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology and more powerful hardware to improve image quality and overall performance. Cyberpunk 2077 has seen several major updates since launch, and this latest update highlights how developers can continue to take advantage of the console's new capabilities as they become available to support existing titles.

The visual upgrade uses Sony's PSSR 2 upscaling feature with artificial intelligence to deliver higher visual quality and performance. Sony announced an upgrade to PSSR 2 and several titles last month, including Capcom Resident Evil Requiem and Pearl Abyss' Crimson Deserthave already adopted the technology. Enhanced PSSR technology is designed to improve image clarity and stability while maintaining a high refresh rate. Cyberpunk 2077 Night City features dense environments, detailed lighting and numerous reflections, making it the perfect title to take advantage of the upgraded visual technology.

PlayStation 5 Pro owners can finally get the 4K clarity Sony promised at launch by enabling the new PSSR 2 feature through the settings menu.

Night City is getting an impressive upgrade

Kuba Knapik, Global Art Director of CD Projekt Red, provided details on the upcoming visual update. Players will be able to download Cyberpunk 2077 update April 8. In addition to using PSSR 2 to improve the overall visual fidelity of the image, developer CD Projekt Red implements 8-way Bounding Volume Hierarchy (BVH8) for improved Ray Tracing.

Ray Tracing ensures better lighting, shadows and reflections are rendered throughout Night City. The developer said that the improved technologies will help bring Night City closer to the vision it always wanted to share with the player. While CD Projekt Red said no new content is coming Cyberpunk 2077it's clear that the company still wants to support the title and the players who still invest time in its world.

In addition to improved visual fidelity, players will be able to choose from three different performance modes. Ray Tracing Pro will include all available Ray Tracing enhancements such as improved reflections, shadows and lighting, targeting 40 FPS on variable refresh rate (VRR) displays or 30 FPS on other displays. Performance mode will provide the highest frame rate possible. According to the developer, displays with VRR support will be able to reach up to 90 FPS. Ray Tracing mode is a happy medium between the two. It aims to balance higher image fidelity and performance. It will enable selected Ray Tracing features and will try to reach 60 FPS. It's likely that this could be the last major game improvement that CD Projekt Red is targeting Cyberpunk 2 and The Witcher 4.

The visual upgrade is a good example of how existing games can evolve alongside new hardware, even years after the game was first released. Updates like this, even without new content, show how developers can continue to support established titles to provide improved experiences for new and existing players, especially as technologies like PSSR become more widespread across PlayStation titles.
