Stardew Valley may have ushered in a new era of cozy farming sims but Crop looks like it could start an anti-cozy farm movement. It's been over 10 years since ConceredApe's indie classic first hit the scene, and it's still going strong, with several free updates and a vibrant modding scene making the game as popular as ever. Many games have tried to imitate it Stardew Valley in the following years and now the newcomer could bring a unique twist to the formula.
While in 1999 Harvest Moon 64 laid the foundation for a cozy gaming frenzy, Stardew Valley has become a defining modern example of the genre. It's the standard by which all farming sims are measured today, and arguably the starting point for the tidal wave of enjoyable games that have flooded the market over the past few years. Stardew Valley inspired a lot of great games with varying degrees of similarity to the title, so it was only a matter of time before developers tried to turn the genre on its head.

Crop looks like a Lovecraftian Stardew Valley
On April 8, 2026, Carbonara Games unveiled its first ever game, a spooky farming sim called Crop. The Stardew Valley the inspiration is immediately apparent when the player character takes over a farm in an unfamiliar town and is tasked with clearing the land, tending the crops and learning more about the townspeople and the surrounding area. Unlike Stardewhowever, it shares elements of the Lovecraftian horror genre it inspired Bloody and Amnesia series, among others. There is an unsettling fog over many scenes and a growing unease as the player character sees flashes of grotesque images, signs of the occult and even a body in the attic.
Like Stardew Valley, Crop also comes from a small team. However, according to the title's Steam page, Carbonara Games is made up of only three developers Crop it also has the support of 11 Bit Studios as a publisher. 11 bits The Alters was one of the best indie games of 2025 and the company released some hidden gems like Death howls and Monthlyso Crop could be one to watch. Publisher pedigree aside, the unique blend of space horror and cozy farming sounds like it could be quite the experience for you. Stardew fans are looking for something a little darker.
According to CropOn Steam, players will dig, plant, irrigate and harvest as they resurrect a broken farm and try to learn more about the mysterious village they find themselves in and must now feed. As players progress, they uncover secrets about the town and how they got there, and it all sounds very ominous, a far cry from comfort and friendliness. Stardew Valley.
