Super Mario Galaxy movie boosts haul to $629 million

Momentum is a serious thing, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has it right. Because a week after the film hit the biggest opening of 2026, it's now the highest-grossing film of the year. It may not surpass the financial prowess of the original The Super Mario Bros. movie. Movie, but it's more than just sticking around.

As first reported by Variety , The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has now grossed $629 million at the global box office, surpassing Ryan Gosling's space drama Project Hail Mary . Where The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has taken the biggest wins is at the international box office, with the film grossing $83.5 million from 81 territories.

The international box office has propelled the animated film to date with $320 million, compared to $308 million from North America. Specifically, per Variety , Mexico, as well as the United Kingdom and Ireland, had the biggest draws at $47.8 million and $37.4 million, respectively.

There's a good chance the film will cross the $1 billion mark before all is said and done. The first film finished with $1.36 billion at the global box office, so consider Galaxy about half that in its second week.

Even if it doesn't top the original, the Super Mario Galaxy movie is still an all-time success

With a global gross of $629 million, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now the third highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time. At this point, everything is more gravy.

The #1 movie of all time is its predecessor, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and #2 is A Minecraft Movie with $960 million. It beat out the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Detective Pikachu, Warcraft, and Rampage in the process earning $629 million.

As Variety noted, $1 billion isn't out of the equation, so when all is said and done, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will, at worst, be No. 2 on the all-time list.

Like A Minecraft Movie before it, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was not praised by critics upon release. However, it resonated with its audience, mostly families and children, to own the box office. That said, never doubt the power of the Nintendo and Mario brand.
